Oh, absolutely. My point is more 1) I’m struck by how my non-sporty friends don’t see *any* of that nuance, and 2) that nuance is part of why racists feel safe hiding behind ‘patriotism’, i.e. *because* they themselves see it as a symbol with more than negative connotations.
Those less interested in sports see it more or less purely as a racist/fascist symbol.
Those of us into sports, or at least I’ll speak for myself, see much of the value to racists as being *because* it now has positive connotations because of its association with sports and particularly football. It gives you plausible deniability in a way e.g. a swastika would not.
An interesting divide opening up in my friend group on flag discourse. Essentially all of us see that recent… goings on are a racist intimidation campaign - but our perceptions of St. George’s cross itself are starkly split on sports fans vs. non-sports fans lines.

Something I’ve noticed is that some of the fandoms of which I’m part seem to have been polluted by politics. Not in a “No, this film is the first one that’s actually totally apolitical” kind of way but in a “OK, do you have an off switch or must you always be obnoxiously self-righteous?” way.

I will admit to being slightly confused as to why Thunderbolts is the preferred of the two versus First Steps, though the consensus seems to be they’re both varying degrees of decent. I thought First Steps’ family angle and aesthetic were breaths of fresh air.
Past a certain point, the stakes become less personal, less relatable and less compelling. E.g. Fallout’s villains have histories and rivalries with Ethan. Dead Reckoning’s villain is a malevolent screensaver.
The penultimate one drained so much of my goodwill. I toyed with seeing the last one but with a three hour runtime and reviews like the above… that’s long haul fodder.
