I put the soft in soft left and he’s managed to take me from cautiously optimistic to despairing to outraged to actively opposed to the party in about a year. Again, I resent being taken on such a journey by such a man.
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
I can’t get the archive.is link to give me an up-to-date version with Starmer’s quote and I’m not subscribing to the fucking Telegraph: do we know if the comments are in response to Linehan’s arrest or is the Telegraph just tying them together?
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
I frankly resent such a pathetic sad sack pissing me off so deeply and so frequently.

Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh, absolutely. My point is more 1) I’m struck by how my non-sporty friends don’t see *any* of that nuance, and 2) that nuance is part of why racists feel safe hiding behind ‘patriotism’, i.e. *because* they themselves see it as a symbol with more than negative connotations.
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
Those less interested in sports see it more or less purely as a racist/fascist symbol.
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
Those of us into sports, or at least I’ll speak for myself, see much of the value to racists as being *because* it now has positive connotations because of its association with sports and particularly football. It gives you plausible deniability in a way e.g. a swastika would not.
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social)
An interesting divide opening up in my friend group on flag discourse. Essentially all of us see that recent… goings on are a racist intimidation campaign - but our perceptions of St. George’s cross itself are starkly split on sports fans vs. non-sports fans lines.
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
Unhealthy man in looks like shit shocker.
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
Riffing on your previous thoughts here but it’s so strange to me that we have a PM as au fait with football and its culture since, well, the last Labour one, but this one’s English, and he still seems like a deer in the headlights when it comes to “What’s the flag in a *good* context?”
John Oxley (@joxley.jmoxley.co.uk) reposted
Feels like the flag debate has been kicking around my whole life and it still boils down to: Civic institutions should fly the flag routinely. Sporting occasions and national events, sure get it out. Year round flag on your house, bit weird, trashy. Doing it to "intimidate the forrins", obvs bad

Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
Possible I’m letting my prejudices speak but there’s a certain breed of centrist for who you can’t make a mistake or capitulate, etc. - there is only another masterstroke of triangulation or a pawn moved in your game of 4D chess. Even if your message is “Yeah, I wouldn’t trust those people either.”

Man who looks and acts like an accountant playacting populism. The absolute worst of all worlds.

there's been a programmatic attempt by the far right going on all all summer - which has, actually, largely failed, because there isn't any real support for it among most Brits - to incite violence against asylum seekers, and the PM has just announced that be backs it
Charlotte Lydia Riley (@lottelydia.bsky.social) reposted reply parent
This response absolutely accepts the premise that asylum seekers are definitionally, what, pedophiles and sex offenders? It is *wild* that he didn’t push back against this.

Not your point but: If the men’s team won back-to-back Euros, you’d have photos of Keir Starmer giving Harry Kane a piggyback tour of Downing Street.
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it’s expected in as much as most people in most countries have a streak of exceptionalism, except a) you’re the global hegemon, and b) your leader routinely threatens to invade other, friendly countries. It kind of stops being cute at that point.

Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
I do think it’s preferable to having a social media feed unpolluted by white supremacy, for what it’s worth, but sometimes it’s nice to just shoot the shit?
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
Something I’ve noticed is that some of the fandoms of which I’m part seem to have been polluted by politics. Not in a “No, this film is the first one that’s actually totally apolitical” kind of way but in a “OK, do you have an off switch or must you always be obnoxiously self-righteous?” way.
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social)
I reckon this may be another example of Badenoch not being a liar (as such) but an occupant of an alternative universe (i.e. she believes this and it’s merely unfortunate the facts don’t back it up).
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
This guy seems exceptional in not actually knowing a *single* fucking thing about the UK or its history.
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it’s more that America is Very Special and the only place where cultures can mix and integrate; in other nations (though especially the UK because I want to say the food is bad) cultures can *never* integrate and will always be The Other [progressive option].
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it’s part of the same strain of American exceptionalism that’s like, “I’m very concerned about Donald Trump and the rise of fascism—“ [sudden dead-eyed stare] “—but if you peons dare insult my beautiful country again I will laugh and applaud as you are crushed under our boot.”
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent

Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
Rumour has it the reason that MPs are so content to let the Houses of Parliament burn down is that Jacob Rees-Mogg saw a fuck-off big spider in his office a couple of years ago. A faction of Lib Dems are willing to just get a glass and a piece of paper but are aware public opinion is against them.

I will admit to being slightly confused as to why Thunderbolts is the preferred of the two versus First Steps, though the consensus seems to be they’re both varying degrees of decent. I thought First Steps’ family angle and aesthetic were breaths of fresh air.
Sam (@spinebusterkeaton.bsky.social) reply parent
Past a certain point, the stakes become less personal, less relatable and less compelling. E.g. Fallout’s villains have histories and rivalries with Ethan. Dead Reckoning’s villain is a malevolent screensaver.

Yeah, a small chunk of the population going feral is less than ideal. What’s worse is three of the major parties, including the government, competing to see who can most validate that small chunk.
