You’re right - his Max Cady is a phenomenal, incandescent character.

I am intrigued, not least because most of the chat has been so overwhelmingly positive. It will be interesting to see whether the film matches my expectations…

Pishing down in Belfast but I am curled up with a great book and these are just perfick Sundays in my little world…the weather beating against the window whilst I can inhabit the glamour and the squalor of 1950s Hollywood…

‘Then come the acid-attacked runaways; they form a curtain of saris around the pumps, so eyes can only see feet… They carry their water in buckets to their shacks to wash themselves and their daughters… They help each other and watch each other. For #LetterboxdFriday, here’s a list of my favourite first-time watches in August. Still on my Naruse kick, with SCATTERED CLOUDS/TWO IN THE SHADOW topping the bill. Minnelli, Mizoguchi, George Stevens, Nicholas Ray & Dag Johan Haugerud’s Oslo Stories also feature highly. #FilmSky boxd.it/NR6JY

Got talking to an Irish guy at a bar and my partner was prognosticating about the world, and the guy said (after a pause) “Well aren’t you Francis Fuckin’ Fukuyama.” It was the funniest moment I’ve had for a while
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
It certainly was. Audiences just weren’t ready for it - although, given the cynical bite of Film Noir preceding it, you do wonder why so few were prepared to give it a go? I guess the 1950s (and the rampant consumerism therein) just didn’t want grim truth but glossy illusion.
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
The Johnny Rosselli book looks great. I always remember James Ellroy’s use of him in his books and thinking ‘I wonder what he was really like?’. I must look out for it!
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
Ha! D’oh! Sorry, I should have known 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
I have seen the first, not the second. I love Angel Face too and his take on Farewell My Lovely is a cracker. I just think The Night of the Hunter is a work of genius Nigel, something beyond anything else that I have seen with him in it. He made some bloody good films but that one is THE one for me.
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
I looked up his other books and that is one that seems to be readily available. I would love to read his book about Sam Fuller but that seems to be trickier to get… Thoroughly enjoying it so far 👍
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social)
I’m at ‘The Night of the Hunter’ now. His finest hour? It’s an obvious choice but bar The Friends of Eddie Coyle, I can’t think of another Mitchum flick that rivals it… #BookSky💙📚 #FilmSky

I listen to a lot of audio on the commute but it’s usually plays or radio dramatisations of books. Currently listening to the Father Paolo Baldi mysteries.

Cracking stuff! Glad you got the desired result and fair play to the 78 Truro fans - that’s some round trip!
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
I love that structure. Surprisingly brief, given the range and extent of his career! Cheers for the elaboration 👍😎
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
I go through phases tbh. I am not too fussed about length but a lot of my books this year have been in and around 3-400 pages. I read comics too which breaks it all up… 🤣❤️

My August reading round up - pretty good month for books I really enjoyed. I see I haven't rated the Rankin but I always LOVE them. They're one of my comfort books (I know, terrible crimes happen in them - what can I say 🤷) but they're like read in two days every damn time! #books #reading
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, it doesn’t seem to be in print or readily available. Will look for secondhand copies 👍

I have loved summer but I'm pretty ready for autumn - warm drinks, dark nights, books and comforting food 🧡. 'Manifesting' those vibes today, as fellow kids do, with homemade soup and scones - up since 5.30am because school rugby coaches hate parents 😂
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
Although, at only 300 pages, it’s a postcard by some of his latter-day standards… 🤣

I will certainly look for more of his work now.

Lee Server could write. And Mitchum, well he lived a FULL life.🔥
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
He really could. There’s a loose grammar to his writing which feels utterly natural - you can hear the cadences in your head as you read…
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s a cracker! There’s a few of his earlier films which I really want to seek out now. Availability is a bit patchy though…
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
You can have it after me mate. I read about his singing ‘talent’… 🤣😬
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
He really did Louise! A contradictory dude (like us all), he was both hellraiser and intellectual, laconic observer and extrovert performer. If half the stuff detailed in here is true, he had a willllllld ride of a life…
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social)
Halfway through this book (the detail is pretty comprehensive) and he has just finished ‘Angel Face’. A stunning masterpiece of malevolence in my opinion but one that gets too little space/writing here… Still a great biography though! Pacy, profane, witty… #BookSky💙📚
Chris (@staggerlee42.bsky.social) reply parent
Now that is certainly one to test the levels of true fandom… Hope you go well today 👍
