So I’m not the only one that feels this way. It seemed as time went on he became more of a caricature of the original design.

It’s a shame that the final cut of this movie removed so much material. And that all of it was lost so any chance for an extended or director’s cut are nil.
Suboptimal Prime (@suboptimalprime.bsky.social) reply parent
With no exaggeration whatsoever Cap is the best translation from comic to film that the MCU executed. It should be a low bar to cross but they’ve tripped on it too many times with other characters.
Suboptimal Prime (@suboptimalprime.bsky.social) reply parent
Wasn’t it directed by the same guys that did Crank? And shot almost exclusively on hand held cameras?
Suboptimal Prime (@suboptimalprime.bsky.social) reply parent
The GOP won’t do anything to stop mass shootings because they know that immediately afterwards Dems will make the same rational proposals about gun control that then allows the GOP to rile up their base with claims that the “Left is coming for your guns”. Every. Damn. Time.
Suboptimal Prime (@suboptimalprime.bsky.social) reply parent
I can’t critique this one too harshly because I watched it on an iPhone while flying somewhere. I do recall it being just over the top crazy and really letting Cage eat all the scenery. Can’t for the life of me remember who the big bad was or how the movie ended.
Suboptimal Prime (@suboptimalprime.bsky.social) reply parent
They’ve spent how many movies and Disney+ series having to deal with this? Kang was supposed to be the big bad at all of that but then that didn’t work. Now they are course correcting to Doom, but of course it isn’t just Doom. So they will spoil that as they try to fix what they broke in Endgame.
Suboptimal Prime (@suboptimalprime.bsky.social) reply parent
I don’t want to say they lucked into Thanos but the Infinity Stones gave them 7 McGuffins to deal with and most of them were so undefined that the writers could use them however they wanted. The biggest mistake they made was the time travel, parallel universes box they opened.
Suboptimal Prime (@suboptimalprime.bsky.social) reply parent
And the larger MCU narrative bits were actually integral to the plot of the film, rather than being tacked on at the end. I feel like that was something that became lost as the MCU expanded and became more interconnected.
Suboptimal Prime (@suboptimalprime.bsky.social) reply parent
CA:TWS will change it but in the first film Zola is just an overzealous scientist that realizes that he’s teamed up with a megalomaniac. A lot of his actions are simply defined by self preservation.
Suboptimal Prime (@suboptimalprime.bsky.social)
He’s absolutely right about the agenda being empathy. That’s what this current iteration of the GOP abhors the most. A populace that cares for one another, treats everyone equally and with respect. That’s what unites and the GOP knows that they can only succeed by sowing mistrust and rancor.
Suboptimal Prime (@suboptimalprime.bsky.social) reply parent
Rock solid cast and the tone and feel of the movie are spot on. And that war bonds song is a real ear worm. The Cap movies are the ones I rewatch the most in the MCU, especially the first two.

Trying to conform long form sequential storytelling into a familiar Hollywood 3 act structure has a way of doing that. The villains and their motivations get painted with the broadest of strokes, just enough so we can get to the big third act showdown and feel like there is something to at stake.

The backstory on what they did to “translate” the series is something else. It wasn’t merely replacing the Japanese text with English. They had to completely rework the pages due to manga reading right to left and that required reworking the backgrounds and word balloons. And then adding color.

My head canon will always be this: The movie is framed by Korg telling a group of children a story about the return of Thor, Jane Foster’s death and how Thor became the foster parent to a girl named Love. He’s an unreliable narrator at best, paraphrasing a story as to be relatable to a child.
