I'm fine with analytic continuation at an intellectual level but it still feels like cheating, you know. But this made me really feel that the result, if it is to make any sense at all, has to be -1/12
Like the original video did clearly invalid manipulations so the criticism of it was justified. Zeta regularization does produce -1/12 but relies on a sleight of hand (a justified one but still). This isn't like that at all. This is just creating a straightforward series and adding the terms up
Basically the point that's made is that when you do standard partial sums you're multiplying with a step function that goes from 1 to 0, which isn't great mathematically. But you can use a smooth weighting function, and exp decay times a cosine to produce negative terms spits out exactly -1/12
Not sure about the general case, but yeah it's equivalent to zeta regularization in this one. But it doesn't use analytic continuation at all. There's no magic

While N is finite you get negative terms which cancel out the positive ones, but as N goes to infinity the series becomes 1 + 2 + 3 + 4.... But it seems like Tao proved that any modulator function would result in CN^2 - 1/12 + other terms that vanish, and the modulator in the vid makes C 0

It's like saying "she was having a latte, an Italian word for a coffee drink made with espresso and milk". "Latte" originated in Italian, but is a fully English word now with English pluralization and so on. Similarly, "haram" is a fully Urdu/Hindi word now that follows standard grammatical rules
Importantly, haram is a word non-Muslims use in the subcontinent too
roughly the same as Arabic, though it can also mean illegitimate (eg a bastard child is "haraami"). But as an Urdu speaker he was using the Urdu word
I personally think he was using the Urdu word "haram" and not the Arabic word "haram", but what would I know other than Mamdani speaks Urdu and not Arabic as far as I know
