For sure - heās been quite politically committed the whole tim: his dissertation is published, Iāve read some of it.
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
I like his work a lot. Am sort of ambivalent about his politics but heās got the chops for both for sure! His book on the communist manifesto is quite engaging too.
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
Ha yes I donāt include those - but we are finally getting to some real books: Narnia and āAlice in Underlandā.
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
Also Kautilya but Iāve just been browsing that.
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
Longest thing Iāve been reading in print is Coetzeeās Provincial Life trilogy but Iāve been on that forever (need to pick up at book 3).
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
My two year old agrees
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
Not just now - started the VSIs to prep for a course Iām teaching in the fall and sort of just kept going. What I need to do now is finish the course prepā¦hard to do while watching the little one all day!

Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
Iāve tried to sign up to Libby but I think San Diego has two library systems and my local one is the wrong one - should keep trying!
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
Iāve been using Spotify and audible premium to scrape the āfreeā libraries.
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
What I tend to dislike is when the author veers off into clearly personal views.
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
Iāve only encountered a few that were badly performed - success rate so far with writing is quite high, but Iāve dropped a few that didnāt appeal.
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
Iāve finally finished Mehtaās Liberalism and Empire. In audiobooks Iāve listened to a bunch more Very Short Introductions: Refugees, Development, Love, Mary Shelley, and Black Holes. Now listening to War and Religion.

A long day of listening: also Skinnerās VSI to Machiavelli.
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
I listened to it on Spotify - and I liked it a lot. Only real criticism is that it focused very heavily on Buddhism, but thatās not something I personally had a problem with. Would have been good to also see more political philosophy, such as Kautilya.
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
Have also finished another VSI: Howeās Empire
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
It also completely ignores how facts always fit a frame.
Jordan S. Carroll (@jordanscarroll.bsky.social) reposted
I think the function of the phrase "facts do not care about your feelings" has been to code democracy as soppy, effeminate, delusional. It suggests that you are hysterical if you want something more than the present system, which should be subject to acclamation rather than protest or debate.
Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
Iāve finished Chenoweth and Stephanās Why Civil Resistance Matters and three Very Short Introductions: to International Relations (Reus-Smit), to Sociology (Bruce), and to Indian Philosophy (Hamilton).

Ike Sharpless (@surlyotter.bsky.social) reply parent
