Terrifying insanity. What can be done to stop this?

(7/26) The most surprising phenomenology happens after input cessation at t≥0: neurons continue oscillating long after stimulation ends, with lifetimes exceeding any intrinsic system timescale, including the plasticity forgetting timescale, by an order of magnitude (panel iii).

The implication was the latter; that consciousness required biology. Therefore silicon consciousness was not viable. Again, I was picking up an undertone and really hoping @dlbarack.bsky.social can shed light here, as he swims in these waters regularly and I was merely a guest.
David Sussillo (@sussillodavid.bsky.social) reply parent
On a related (perhaps different?) note, at the SNAP philosophy of neuro meeting, there was an undercurrent of thought that consciousness required biology. This really confused me because it felt a bit like “we need bio-magic” for consciousness. What am I missing?

Finally, a book that combines early childhood trauma with neural networks and AI. Just what the field was missing.

Coming March 17, 2026! Just got my advance copy of Emergence — a memoir about growing up in group homes and somehow ending up in neuroscience and AI. It’s personal, it’s scientific, and it’s been a wild thing to write. Grateful and excited to share it soon.

But what if the murmuration does "compute-like" things, such as temporarily hold static (low-dimensional) state or transition along a temporarily constructed state diagram?

Come see Nishal’s poster today at #cosyne2025 (Session 2, 2-051)! We’ve added a per-trial inferred bias to LFADS, boosting interpretability by turning multistable dynamics into contextual ones. Less murky, more meaningful with many practical applications such as denoising data.

1/7 Our paper on individual variability in decision-making is finally out in @nature.com! Inspired by the classic work by Mante and Sussillo, we trained many rats to solve context-dependent decision-making, and we found that different brains use different neural mechanisms to solve the same task!

Aggregate all the papers over the last decade on task-based and data-based modeling of brains. And ask it to come up with a research program about foundational models, but with the goal being to understand the brain. Have it list the most important hypotheses, best animal models, and experiments.

I see where your are coming from and point taken about neuroeconomics, but saying I work on/in neuroAI so succinctly and specifically states what I do in a way that “systems neuroscience” does not. There really is a subfield imo.

I went to my first ballet this week and learned that if you want to listen to ballet you don’t need to know any expressions at all! After 10 minutes of ballerinas dancing all over the damned stage, I bent over and quietly whispered into my wife’s ear, “So, uhh, there’s no words in ballet?” 😆
David Sussillo (@sussillodavid.bsky.social) reply parent
I see your point, but a lot has come together over the last decade+ to enable for the first time what could be called “systems neuroscience” but more precisely is “neuroscience big data meets AI-fueled tools and optimized neural net modeling.” Which I’m happy to call NeuroAI if there is consensus.

David Sussillo (@sussillodavid.bsky.social) reply parent
I've always been dubious about bringing things back to the circuit and have been content to study the functions at the state-space level. Especially after this pub (below). It appears we can identify an oscillation of the grandfather clock but not the gearing. proceedings.neurips.cc/paper_files/...
