I don't *love* my union because it does a lot of stuff I disagree with - but I do value them and the resources they provide. I know I have options if things get nasty. We spend 40+ hours a week working. It is a huge part of our lives. Having a healthy and safe work environment means the world to me

He walked away with a sweet early retirement deal, which was best because who wants to work for a boss that undermines you all the time? But to have someone in your corner, with teeth, that can say "this isn't right" means the world to someone broken by mistreatment

Finally, he refused to do work above his classification without being promoted to that classification. His boss refused and tried to punish him for refusing work above his pay grade. My Dad got the union involved and when he showed his receipts, the union fought like heck for him

Labour Day is important for me. Unions and the labour movement have given me so much, like others, such as fighting for living wages, the weekend, vacation and sick days, etc. But it's more personal for me. My father was mistreated at work for years. It started small but grew more toxic.

99.9% of the time, someone's gender has little impact on my life. I dont need to know anything about your DNA, hormones, genitals, or medical history to not be a douche. Society is filled with diverse ppl - the emphasis should be on learning how to respect and work with those you may not understand
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social) reply parent
Genitals and chromosomes matter in some contexts but the vast majority of times, we look at gender. Say its winter and someone drops a glove and I chase after them. Do I shout "sir" Or "ma'am"? Im not checking genitals or DNA. Winter clothing hides our bodies. Im likely reading fashion cues

"I'm not a lazy parent. I know the consequences. Look at all this time, energy, and money I'm investing in my child and making sure they eat healthy, exercise, get the best schooling, and don't get poisoned by vaccines." Scientists can offer facts, but can't challenge parenting culture. IMHO
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social) reply parent
Parents want the best for their kids and to set them up for success. I think anti-vaccine worries come from a fear of hidden harms, judgement from others, but also, sometimes, a desire to feel superior to others. "You haven't done your homework, but I have. I put in the effort and now know better...
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social) reply parent
I think vaccine misinformation has an emotional root to it. For example, I think parenting comes with a lot of anxiety and fear of judgement. We criticize past generations for not knowing spanking was bad, or not understanding nutrition, or not supervising their kids.
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social) reply parent
My Dad started to read anti-vaxxer stuff during Covid. He now refuses to get vaccinated, despite being diabetic, 80, and recently having cancer. My mom is immunocompromised and the last time she got covid she was hospitalized for a week because her lungs were filled with fluid. He puts her at risk
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social) reply parent
The problem is that vaccines work through herd immunity. When the vast majority are vaccinated, there are fewer people to host the virus, the virus can't mutate as much, and ppl who are immunocompromised or too young to get the vaccine are protected too. Everyone needs to work together

Someone mistakenly tried to equate gluten free with healthy. I informed them that gluten is delicious and has great texture, so if you remove gluten, bakers typically replace with lots of sugar and fat, and have to reduce fiber. Don't go gluten free unless gluten makes you really sick

A decent tech startup *should* be consulting with a lawyer that will write into their TOS that you can't sue if there is a defect in what the AI generates. But you're right, not all tech startups will consult with a lawyer for their TOS
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social) reply parent
If a lawyer messes up, you can hold them responsible. But you can't sue AI for incompetence. I think there is likely a place for AI, especially when it comes to e-discovery and sorting and summarizing info, but the final product needs to be reviewed, and you would need to deal with privilege issues

Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social)
Asking my husband about the theories behind fascism and he managed to turn it into a conversation about typography. Apparently Fraktur was considered very "German" by the nazis, until someone said it had Jewish roots, and they literally switched the writing style in Germany to distance themselves

The past few years have been so bizarre and outlandish that I thought you meant he literally passed away on election day. So I guess that says where my mind is at
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social) reply parent
As a Canadian, I keep hearing about long lines at polling stations, and I don't think I've ever had to wait more than 5 minutes to vote (although I do live in a large city). Who is campaigning on making voting cumbersome? Elections Canada is struggling to find ways to get people to vote
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social) reply parent
not widespread or systemic. Most cases are like, elderly people that forgot that they voted in the advanced polls and try to vote on election day. Making it difficult to vote doesn't serve citizens. So, what do Americans do if they lose their wallets? Or get their citizenship a few days before?
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social) reply parent
They do not want to turn voters away. They do not like long lines. They want lots of accessible locations that are close to you. They are trying to get more people to vote, not less. Sure, there are sometimes investigation into voter fraud, but most of the time it's a nothingburger and definitely
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social) reply parent
If you just moved and Elections Canada doesn't have your current address, you can show pieces of mail that you have received with the new address. If you lose your wallet, there are ways that you can swear a solemn oath that you are who you say you are and have a neighbour vouch for you /3
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social) reply parent
You can register on the same day as voting. There are always heartwarming stories of New Canadians getting citizenship a day or two before the election and then bringing their paperwork to the polls to show that they can vote in Canada for the first time /2
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social)
Question for my American friends. There is a lot of talk about voter registration right now, which is dramatically different than in Canada. In Canada, if you file taxes, you just check a box that says to share your info with Elections Canada, which keeps things up to date
Tactical Bra (@tacticalbra.bsky.social)
AI can have a place in legal work. For example, in e-discovery, where you might need to sort through 50,000 documents and catalogue them fast. If you design AI products and want to work with lawyers, there are decent opportunities, but AI cannot replace a lawyer wallstreetpit.com/119841-from-...
