Probably even more because of Ian. He lives in a hut in the woods and owns a collection of this exact rifle, but each with different production flaws.

And I think they were a bit more flexible, right? I think the late persian and then also the Eastern Roman cataphracts could have either lances or bows and a single unit of them would often have a combination of both.
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
Although I don't exactly associate them with knights. They had cataphracts or something? I think real knight nerds would argue that they weren't knights because not a social class in a feudalist system or something. Otherwise the OG late Roman Empire had eques which where somewhat similar to knights
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, the Holy Roman Empire back in the day was by the people in it mostly called the Roman Empire and they thought it had to be the same thing, because the fall of the Roman Empire was supposed to start the apocalypse based on a verse in the bible, so... . :D

Wait, Charlie Kirk is dead? And wasn't basically every other assassination attempt against right wingers committed by other right wingers anyway? Wouldn't surprise me if it was some enraged fan who got mad at Kirk for not saying the n-word often enough.

Technically the Department of War split into the D. of the Army and D. of the Air Force which together with the until then independend D. of the Navy then formed National Military Establishment and that one was then renamed to D. of Defense. And now renamed to D. of War.

Does remembering history include knowing that Churchill never said this? The actual quote is "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" by Spanish-American philosopher George Santayana. This quote is inscribed on a plaque near the remains of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Sure, but I think it's this very specific glossy/plastic-like appearance. I also recognize it immediately as AI & I never had a case so far where it didn't turn out to be AI. There are other typical AI styles where it gets more difficult though. The less realistic it means to be the more difficult

Well, the crusade against the Cathars was in the early 13th century. The first crusade was at the very end of the 11th century and also included the "People's Crusade" where a bunch of common people attacked Jewish communities in what is now Germany to pillage what they needed to reach the Holy Land

Well, according to my quick search I that's the popular folk etymology, but there are other possible origins from Celtic or Brythonic like helyg (willows) or heli (salt water) and others. Etymology of placenames is often much more fuzzy than we (and tour guides) would like it to be.

It's such bullshit. School shootings are this distinctive American thing in terms of frequency to the point that it's like a punchline in every third joke about American culture. It's a problem for so long. And now the Republicans suddenly try to spin it as this recent "woke" epidemic?

Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, there was the whole process of the Republicans evolving from the anti-slavery party to the conservative one, while democrats went from pro-slavery to more socially progressive. 1941 was still in the transition and the Republicans were more pro equal rights than the democrats back then I think

Always the same. I think it was similar with Vikings where they talked so much about all the research and authenticity, but the moment someone goes "But.... it's not well researched" they suddenly go "Well, that was never the point anyways! You want some free mud?! Take it, we have plenty!"
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
Even their own propaganda only consists of empty aesthetics, all spectacle without substance. So it all works out for them. There are fascists out there who will blast Killing in the Name of by RATM and just pretend it's made for them, going "Yes, we love killing, we're the chosen whites!"
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
It's actually very common for modern fascists to intentionally hijack leftist/anti-fascist bands like that, there are many examples. Those types were socialized on 4Chan, everything they do has 6 layers of irony and they steal everything with the right "vibe" regardless of content.
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
The comments of the official upload are full of nazis as well as Russians larping as Wehrmacht. There is also a leftist rapper who made a rather silly song called Stumpf ist Trumpf (Blunt/dumb is trump (card) and apparantly a bunch of Frech nazis think it's a hymn of Western/white pride or something
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
That kind of stuff happens so often. There is also a Band called Eisbrecher and their singer literally had an interview where he adovocated for leftist politics, but especially their song "This is Deutsch" basically became a nazi hymn, even though it completely makes fun of them.

Okay, I just don't understand your point. The big "pro-practical effects" line is always "use practical effects where it's possible and then use CGI for the rest" and that's what they did in Terminator 2. They came up with the liquid metal idea and used CGI bc they could not have done it otherwise.
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
Well, I've looked into it and a lot of effects were also practical and even the purely CGI effects like the liquid metal stuff were combined with practical make-up stuff.
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
I guess you can give him that he said stupid stuff about the medieval age (and yes, he writes that quote in the context of Charles IV) to feel all superior about his own time before the Victorians made it cool.

Thank you for reminding me of my undying hate for Voltaire.
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't understand. Are there like bad practical effects in it? Nobody said there were never any practical effects that looked bad. Obviously, you will always find those examples. But there are also many movies where mostly(!) practical effects hold up quite well, like Carpenters The Thing.
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
Like they made an entire software with early (rule-based) AI mechanics (MASSIVE) for those giant battles, but then once you got closer to those soldiers you had actual people in masks and real horses (most of the riders of Rohan are actually women with fake beards riding their own horses)
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, those movies obviously still use computer effects. But as far as I see, the best results are usually when as much as possible is done with practical effects and CGI and stuff is mostly supplementing it. The three Lord of The Rings movies are a great example for that.
Tannin (@tannintheyeen.bsky.social) reply parent
Honestly, whenever I see news about Gaza, Trump, ect. I mostly just want to punch stuff, preferably the people who are responsible. I was never an angry person, I'm the kind of person who just gets cuddly when drunk. But recently... I often feel very overcharged with destructive energy and despair.
