The reason this is news is the trump admin is not allowing trans people to serve any more. That’s why this is in the news, basically in these circumstances it’s not uncommon to allow early retirement if it’s due to a change in policy but in this case they denied the exceptions to policy.
It’s not only trans. They would need an exception to policy to retire early and were denied. Cis service members would go through the same process. Trans service members that are at 19 years are able to retire normally.
For those that do not know, you typically have to serve 20 years in order to receive retirement pay, there are circumstances where early retirement can be authorized between 15 and 18 years. They’re saying no you cannot retire early, you have to be within your window in order to retire.
Very misleading. From what I gathered it’s just denying trans service members that have not reached the minimum retirement window of 20 years the ability to retire early rather than be separated.
