While I’m happy we’re implementing phonics instruction more consistently, I still worry that too many of us believe lockstep adherence to a curriculum is the solution, not high quality teacher training + increased instructional autonomy.
Andrea (@teachbk.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m suspicious because too often, small gains are turned into excuses not to question the plan, as if we would be better off waiting to see what happens before our critiques become relevant. Unfortunately our students don’t have the luxury of waiting around while we figure it out.

When we truly want to engage in dialogue with young people, we have to let them talk. This means accepting how & when they express themselves and using language as a means of communication, not as a tool for exercising authority.
Andrea (@teachbk.bsky.social) reply parent
Speaking with children requires patience & understanding. They are still learning how to use language and their thoughts are not always fully developed, but they deserve the same respect and dignity we afford to adults with full autonomy over their language.
Andrea (@teachbk.bsky.social) reply parent
How often do we (including myself here) - interrupt to correct their grammar - dictate the word/s we want them to use - finish their sentences or cut them off mid-explanation - hush them bc it's not a convenient time for us - ignore their message bc we don't like their tone
Andrea (@teachbk.bsky.social)
I think adults should be more aware of how we limit children's language development by policing their grammar, tone, vocabulary, and timing. We also limit our own understanding of their insights. We learn more from them when we simply allow them to speak.
Andrea (@teachbk.bsky.social) reply parent
I also remember telling anyone who would listen that there is no magic program that will make kids learn to read. We need to empower teachers with strategies that address the specific learning needs of the individuals in our classes. Programs come & go. Train the teachers. 3/3
