Terrence Marks (@terrencemarks.com) reply parent
Back in college, my band did covered Leave It. We stripped all the subtlety out and played it as a straight rocker. Like what Yes did to Simon & Garfunkel’s America but in reverse. We were hoping it’d be like DEVO’s cover of Satisfaction. We did not have the same intrigue as a court of kings.

so, to understand this story there are a few things you need to know - my cat, Gus, believes he is a trained support animal - he is not (he has relatives who are, but he is not) - he believes he is a seizure-detecting dog - he is not a dog - I do not get seizures

(My fondness for bloom. for example is not unrelated to them being the biggest band in Gainesville when I went to college. I’m sure otherwise I’d see them as a fairly standard 90s alt-rock that never made the big time)

There are a lot of bands that I love the one album I got when I was 20 but there other stuff - which is pretty much the same - doesn’t resonate with me as much. There’s a lot of music I would have liked more 30 years ago Also, apparently I like every song on Assim Assado’s sole album
Terrence Marks (@terrencemarks.com) reply parent
3) While these are all excellent albums, a lot of it is just the right music finding me at the right time - when I was younger *and* would dwell longer on an album because I didn’t have a billion hours of streaming music at my fingertips. I try not to let my tastes ossify but it’s hard.
Terrence Marks (@terrencemarks.com) reply parent
By that point in the album, I'm Along For The Ride, y'know?
Terrence Marks (@terrencemarks.com) reply parent
2) There's a lot of songs that may not make the playlist but wouldn't rise to the level of actual skipping; it's not bad, but it's the sixth-best song on the album. There are a lot of bands that have a high floor which makes it hard to stand out
Terrence Marks (@terrencemarks.com) reply parent
1) The nice thing about mp3 playlists is all the bad songs come pre-skipped. I'm never going to listen to Student Demonstration Time just because it's the next song.

So I thought I had some major Syd Barrett news. Last week, I came across this - a Syd Barrett cover from The Purple Gang's 1968 album. A year before Syd Barrett himself released it. 1/9 youtu.be/3fJL7SXCsbY
Terrence Marks (@terrencemarks.com) reply parent
Also, turns out that this was a known fact. Just not by me. I hadn't been keeping up with Syd Barrett news since there's been precious little of it in my lifetime, and if I had read about this, I lacked the context to appreciate it. So here you go. Context. 9/9
Terrence Marks (@terrencemarks.com) reply parent
Turns out the song I heard is on the album - the expanded 2017 release. They finally recorded it in 2006. In my defense, when they say "2006 version" they usually mean that's when it was remastered or remixed youtu.be/nBabGRYeg-c 8/9

(unrelatedly, the only song listed under Syd Barrett on Youtube Music is Rhamadan, a tuneless 20-minute piece for guitar, bongos, and motorcycle. You can find it and listen to it if you want, but the novelty wears off long before the twenty minutes is up. I'm a superfan, but still no.) 7/9
Terrence Marks (@terrencemarks.com) reply parent
Here I Go didn't fit Syd's usual style. I wonder what the other songs on the tape were. Chris Joe Beard, Purple Gang's guitarist, says "Golden Hair" was one. I think "Love You" is a bouncy tune that would lend itself to a skiffle arrangement but I'm just speculating. 6/9 youtu.be/5PX82V_q2zw
Terrence Marks (@terrencemarks.com) reply parent
Also, while "Granny Takes a Trip" seems like it'd scandalous enough to get attention, yet innocuous enough to get airplay, it flew too close to the sun and got banned. The follow-up single didn't chart. They didn't release anything else until 1998 5/9 thestrangebrew.co.uk/interviews/p...
Terrence Marks (@terrencemarks.com) reply parent
Pink and Purple were both recording at the same studio when Syd Barrett and gave The Purple Gang a demo with a few songs, including Here I Go, which he wrote for them. The label's CEO didn't want them doing covers, so that got nixed. Then they lost the tape. 4/ 9 youtu.be/lhUT00LJbAM

The Purple Gang was a skiffle band - skiffle is British schoolboys playing jugband music; was HUGE in the 50s. They're known for Granny Takes a Trip. It's made it to a lot of compilations on the strength of its title 3/ 9 youtu.be/nTP0WoVJ9co

The thing about 70s comedy albums is if you listen to them on your own, they’re hilarious. When you tell a friend they gotta check this out, turns out they’re kinda rambling and rely WAY too much on one of the guys doing a silly voice and/or a seriously inappropriate accent.
