The actual story of COVID is pretty straightforward, but where it touches culture and politics the lesson is the opposite that the people who control the levers of power want it to be. Socialism and shared sacrifice: boo. hiss. Individualism and consumerism: yay!

Each time in our nation's history that our institutions held our democratic republic together they only got stronger if the people chose to strengthen them. What Republicans realized after Nixon was that strengthening our institutions gained them nothing.

The key point here is that Nichols *agrees* that the people in prison deserve to be there. Forever. Longer if possible. When Trump talks about people who were born criminals, Nichols nods his head and says "Democrats lose because they don't talk about this."

Even if you could magically make all Democrats stop saying these words, the Republican culture-war machine will make up new scary words that Democrats say. "Constitution" "Inalienable" "Rights" "I am an American citizen" And 3rd Way will dutifully tell Democrats not to say those words either.
