Doesn't everyone have a work nemesis?
Chicagoan. I like food, music, history, sports and tech. Transit and cycling is the future. Studied History, work in tech, weird combo. The widespread proliferation of LLMs & GenAI is a crisis. Check the pinned post if you're curious.

And any pushback to replacing [tried and tested tool you know and love] is being considered "sabotage" as if this is a new phenomenon vs the expected reaction to the incredibly rushed implementation of untested and often unimpressive technology
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social)
This is framed as a GenAI issue but its a change management issue. Some % of your staff are always sabotaging change, tech or non tech related. With GenAI, people don't see the benefits and so when forced to use it, they aren't adopting. Thats poor change management
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social) reply parent
*supported but y'all could figure that out
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social) reply parent
Over 41% of sales managers I've supposed would admit to sabotaging the sales operations systems I set up so this doesn't even sound strange for a tech solution

Not a great look. I'm a subscriber and I don't find the Substack concern a compelling enough reason to ditch a quality publication, we can all only deal with so many issues as individuals. But your defense is going far beyond that and your comparisons to Ghost make you appear misinformed on the tech

Yea I was a little nit picky there, just love bread. They still wouldn't be a soft loaf like this or anything and could be filled with all sorts of fillers(kind of like milk at the time)
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social) reply parent
OP Is still absolutely nuts though
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social) reply parent
Actually, the modern loaf is a little older than you're thinking. It was actually a pretty controversial issue in industrializing England. "White" flour lasts longer and thus poor workers were more likely to buy that bread, despite efforts to push them into buying whole grain bread.

in a job search and I hate the amount of personal data that I have to share with companies, on cloud based 3rd party software, that they then retain and use however they'd like. Certainly don't want to have entire recorded conversation with your GenAI chatbot.
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social)
Got his with this chatbot today and it had me thinking how much Bots/Agents change business interactions. If I speak with someone at a company, I know they may take notes and potentially record the convo depending on locality. A bot documents everything and the company owns the data. Quite intrusive

You can explain yourself as much as you'd like, and you can even be legally correct. Won't matter to a mob. I understand GenAI isn't going away, I wouldn't even argue for that, but without a drastic change to its current adoption, people will respond when it hurts then e.g. CSAM

It's a funny phenomenon that usually goes the other way: capital will take on short term pain to prevent long term change. Usually that means preventing good stuff from happening but it's causing them to cover up the instability/chaos in hopes things just keep moving forward

No other tech has been rolled out the way LLMs have. It's nearly impossible to remove from any new phone, its auto on for most applications right when added. Its fundamentally differently

That makes the energy usage different. I dont want to talk to an AI agent, make it easier to cancel my subscription. Unnecessary to build data centwrs to power *that*.

The difference is some extent of choice & autonomy. I won't pretend people organically decide to post tiktoks, but short form video is something people have chosen to seek out. LLM chatbots/agents have been shoved into most applications and many business processes. People did ask for that

One reason I connect so much with this piece is that OP and I seem to agree on this: LLMs are impressive technology but the gap between what they do, and what their creators claim they can do, is immense. The true issue is how society is adopting these tools, in both macro and micro ways. 9/

The finances underpinning GenAI are truly insane. There is an massive web of companies that are building their products and business processes around GenAI. So much of our economy is being oriented around these LLMs and data centers but these 7 tech companies cannot grow forever. It will crash. 7/
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social) reply parent
People often say "We gotta get on board or we'll be left behind" w/r/t GenAI. Are the these people aware of how poorly the most recent OpenAI model release went or how companies are increasing LLM pricing? Its such a blind parroting of marketing and hype with no personal understanding. 6/
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social) reply parent
The impacts on our workforce cannot be overstated, and while this is currently being heavily felt in technology roles, its bleeding into every field, if it isn't entrenched already. Here is a great companion piece on this specific issue 5/
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social) reply parent
Nearly every advanced technology goes through stages of adoption, often never reaching a mass market, because powerful tech shouldn't be given to those who do not understand how to safely use it. So many people who recommend using LLMs, including at work, have no idea how they work. That's weird! 4/
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social) reply parent
This part strongly resonates: If the GenAI boosters are right about what LLMs can do, our world will change far more than the median person understands. If nearly everything is LLM powered, most companies will be unnecessary and many fields will be obsolete. That isn't my prediction, its theirs 3/
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social) reply parent
Chatbot use often sounds right out of a Sci Fi story. I often think about this movie, The Time Machine. Its a bad movie but it adds an interesting plot point to the original: hyper focused on changing the past, despite evidence he cannot, the lead causes so much pain repeating the same mistake 2/
Toneloaf (@toneloaf.bsky.social)
This was a very informative piece, does a great job of staying away from caricatures and really thinks about the implication of GenAI and LLM usage in our society. Its a topic I'm very invested in, so I put together a 🧵with some additional thoughts and some posts that go well with the piece. 1/
