token usage and mostly use other models! So yeah, what we can say is that the LLM with the biggest share of users had a huge drop off in usage when school holidays started in the US. Really what you'd need is user counts to confirm. Still gonna leave this up but I thought it important to caveat.
Tristan Stevens (@tristanstevens.bsky.social) reply parent
Someone else has shared an article pointing out that this calamitous drop in token count is mostly reserved for OpenAI, but looking into it further it seems that OpenAI represents most of the users of LLMs, but not a very high share of token count. Turns out that's because coding bots really drive
Tristan Stevens (@tristanstevens.bsky.social) reply parent
down for ChatGPT, that represents a disproportionate share of users. Of course this still doesn't prove it was students, I'm just learning that token counts are iffy as an assessment of use rbase.

Claude is the biggest model by token count, and these are the apps using it that are displayed on that website. As you can see the big hitters are all for coding. So yeah, it makes sense that general token count across then industry aren't going down, that's mostly coders, but if things are going
Tristan Stevens (@tristanstevens.bsky.social) reply parent
So I'm looking into this more and it is a question of 'how well does token usage correspond to users', because ChatGPT represents *way* more user-share then token-share. I thought maybe image generation was skewing it, but looking at the site discussed in the article it's not images, it's code.
Tristan Stevens (@tristanstevens.bsky.social) reply parent
I would wonder if that's something to do with the type of content being generated? I'm assuming image processing is far more computationally expensive for example. I do agree though that this imply we can't use token count to say that it was school holidays starting causing a drop off in users.
