yep, that's pretty much the problem. but we're now in a situation where getting elected has completely perverse incentives that are totally at odds with good governance, with a hyper-polarized electorate, and I don't know what can reasonably be done about it

I think one of the difficulties with grappling with this is that when you DO come to grips with it, what is the conclusion that you draw? That nearly half the country is made up of horrible human beings who hate everything you care for, and that we'd all be better off without them.

If you're going to implement an open borders policy, it's not just about ensuring that the original inhabitants of the country are taken care of, but you also need to ensure that you're actually providing a good quality of life for the immigrants, and Canada really didn't do that.
I wouldn't have said this a few years ago, but living in Canada and watching what happened due to massively increased immigration made me temper my views a lot. The immigrants themselves tended to really regret coming here just because of the fact that we simply couldn't handle them all.
I agree with this in theory but I really don't think it's feasible to actually implement without a TON of work. Our systems are set up to assume a certain level of capacity, and if immigration to a desirable place gets opened wide up, those systems won't be able to handle the increased burden.
