Not a trained historian but working on a major history (of American higher ed). From a more institutionalist point of view (as a political scientist) I find the many histories that are leadership/person centered challenging to follow. They place a person at center stage, almost as a one man show.

Those at the bottom of the selective ladder accept pretty much everyone bc they attract mostly people who can't get in elsewhere or can't get funding elsewhere. And every year some of these close because they can't attract students and their finance crash. Has been this way for a century.
You know this, Kim, but lots don't: "Selective" schools are "selective" bc they have far more qualified applicants eager to enroll than they have room for. They select among folks who could succeed equally well. Rejected ones dream something will turn around so they can go to their choice.

Well I swing both ways as a scholar and teacher. Or did. Always needed the theory, always needed the systematic empirical observation. Human life and society are not timeless, I would argue: very much grounded in history and human experience.

Very cool. I wondered for years why “comparative politics” seemed to be pretty much everywhere but the US, and we Americanists were mostly taught a single country perspective. But am I sad I’m retired and don’t have to figure this out for my teaching now? Oh, my.
But a lot of work in the very various Americanist field has always considered change.
It’s quite a big and various subfield, so we’ll see … sone of course will have to change bc they are losing funding. I bet a lot are doing hell of a lot more reading on previous autocracies, de-democratization, earlier periods of US etc to figure out how to integrate into their work.
Speaking as an Americanist in touch with a lot… not sure I’ve heard of any who haven’t figured that out…
