I saw another artist I follow on IG post about this too, and they ended up ID'ing the persons. I won't share that here though, but I think these grifters are hopefully going to be banned from many other cons once word spreads. Cheers to the DragonCon staff for sticking up for real artists!

But yeah, what a shame. Corus could have sold the studio off to a new owner who could have tried to keep it open. Nelvana of the late 90s and 2000s is the one I most remember since they produced so many shows based on childrens literature. 😢
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
Now the question is, which mega-corp will end up buying Nelvana's massive library of shows if Corus goes under completely? I certainly hope it isn't a certain mouse-themed company or the other mega-corp with the bird logo.

You never know what great deals you can find at your local thrift/consignment/second-hand shop! 😁 . Samsung 46'' Smart TV, from 2012. When Frutiger Aero UX was still hanging on, and smart features stayed out of the way unless you brought them up. Works good so far. Further info in Alt Text.

Minor correction to my first reply... I meant to say nearly all physical 3DS games can be played offline, along with anything you may have been able to get off the eShop before it closed. I think the 3DS hacking community has archived nearly all the digital-only games though which is good.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
I do worry about the circle pad falling off from age. I don't know if it's a common issue or not, and I'm not that well experienced taking electronics apart. I wanted to get a N2DS XL, but the price and the hard-to-replace battery was a major turn off. 🙁
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
I guess it's because of nostalgia, the fact that nearly all games can be played offline (DLC is another story since the 3DS eShop closed), and once modded, it can become a very versatile handheld for homebrew and emulation. I just hope my current N3DS XL lasts another decade before it dies on me.

I ask myself the same question. 🫤 Ultimately, it's the few good souls and artists that remain there that in turn, prevent me from deleting my account. But all things must come to an end, and simply browsing there is enough to sour my mood. So much bad stuff overtaking the good stuff...

The only thing that could make Labor Day less boring, the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, is a thing of the past, having ended after 2014. . So it ends up just being another day to me. At least I get time-and-a-half at my current job on that holiday. That's good. 🙂
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social)
You know, when you spent nearly all your childhood and teen life in a small rural town with big Labor Day celebrations (carnival, parade, etc), you realize just how boring the holiday can be once you end up in your current town that does absolutely nothing for the holiday. . And to top it off...

Probably the only news outlet I still trust is NPR and PBS News Hour, but who knows how long they will last, unless the viewers and organizations step up donations to cover the loss of the CPB? It's even more dire at the local level where some stations may have to go off air. 😢

I don't remember these at all! Perhaps they were so short lived that I completely missed out on these. I guess BK took note of this, as in May/June 2002, they partnered with Shaquille O'Neal to help promote their own sourdough burger: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXwe...

I've been meaning to get these for my own PS2, but still, I agree that these need a modern re-release as well. I also had Taito Legends back in the day, and several of those games are being re-released under the Taito Memories series.

Out of curiosity, what brand/kind of fruit juice where you buying before you got this cool new manual juicer? I think I need to start exploring ways to cut back on expenses too, and I think I can start with sweet tea. The brand I usually buy is $3.50 per gallon jug from Dollar General.

As for me, I have a new-ish AM/FM Radio, an Eton Elite Field. Yes, FM radio can get repetitive, but my area was skipped by the big corporate giants like Audacy or iHeart. There are still really good stations I can pick up, along with NPR of course. 😉
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
I wonder if this will support MP3 CDs? When you get it, search the model number to locate the user manual on Sony's website. They keep manuals for many of their older products. I bought two older Sony DVD players at an estate sale in Spring, and the manuals were still on their support site.

Plus, KSFY/KDLT seem to favor Weigel Broadcasting networks for their OTA offerings. They already have StartTV, MeTV, and MeTV Toons available in my area. Maybe one day they'll add H&I, Decades, etc.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
It will be interesting to see how things play out in my rural market when the big-four broadcast networks collapse. I mostly watch local news from KSFY/KDLT since despite being a full-power duopoly, their local news is easier to stomach than KELO's over-produced fluff. They are also sisters to WANF.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
Even before this new admin, station groups were already consolidating multiple Big-4 affiliations onto digital subchannels. My state has been spared from Tegna, but we still have to deal with a Gray and Nexstar duopoly in all major South Dakota markets. And I barely watch the Nexstar station anyway.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
I recall up until just a few years ago, Walmart still carried movie/music posters, but I forget which section. I'd like to think it's near stationery if Walmart still carries them. It also would be good to maybe check out other IRL stores like Target, Hot Topic, Spencers, etc.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
Were there any South Dakota cities on that list? I imagine no, but here, it depends where you go. Rural groceries can be costly, but in the big cities, you can still find decently prived stuff at the big chains like Aldi, HyVee, etc.

And yes, while BlueSky has the 250 character limit, there is literally no algorithm to throttle or bury your posts, chronological feed is default, and the block tools actually work. These are the main reasons so many kidlit creatives have moved here. If possible, read Debbie Ohi's guide on BlueSky.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
That's weird. The only way to get around this is to turn off two-factor authentication, which is why BlueSky is asking for your phone when you try to sign in on your iPad. Try "Settings > Privacy and Security > Two Factor Authentication" and see if it's turned on. If it is, click to turn it off.

AI in Apple stuff is inevitable, but I only hope they don't start forcing it onto it's customers like M$ is doing with "Copilot". I mean, Notepad... f'ing NOTEPAD has "Copilot" AI in it now! 🤬 And you pretty much have to resort to third party hacks to shut that "Copilot" junk AI off.

The EU did force Apple to switch to USB-C for iPhones last year, I think, but it will be a long while before all of their iOS devices will have it. For me though, Mac is the one that works out the best since Linux has always failed me in some way with hardware or software issues.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
My current iMac is 4.5 years old, and though it's starting to get a bit slow, I feel it's going to last another three or four before I'll have to upgrade.... if Apple OS'es don't become as annoying as Windows. Currently, you can turn Apple's AI features off with a simple switch in the settings.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
Have you ever considered moving to the Mac/iPad ecosystem? Apple isn't perfect either, but I find MacOS to be far less annoying than Windows. Feature creep like AI and increasing advertising is what drove me away from Windows. The biggest downside to Apple is how expensive their stuff is.

In closing, Sioux City got it worse. The combined CBS/Fox operation, KPTH/KMEG, had their local news staff laid off about two years ago and now the morning and evening news slots are filled with their "National Desk" filler. The other two stations, KCAU and KTIV, are Nexstar and Gray operations too.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
So yeah, even though Gray did this through the proper FCC channels of the time, it still resulted in less choice for news. There is an independent station, KSFL on channel 36, promising a new Sioux Falls newscast, but as of now, all we get is a simulcast of "Forum News Network" from Fargo, ND. 🫠
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
The sale was approved in September 2019, and the two stations officially combined in January 2020. As of today, KELO is still the leader and all the major affiliations in my market are controlled by Nexstar and Gray. KELO has CBS, MyNetwork TV and CW, and KSFY/KDLT got ABC, NBC, and Fox.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
The first station merger like this was KSFY and KDLT in Sioux Falls, SD. Gray TV sought to buy third-place NBC station KDLT from Red River Broadcasting, hoping the combined operation would put a dent in the ratings of long-time "leader" KELO, owned by Nexstar. At the time, Gray needed an FCC waiver.

Same with me, though I'm not into BluRay too much. The majority of my movies and cartoons are on DVD, and my Disney collection is VHS. 😊 I use a 2009 Samsung HDTV which still has many analog video connections, and older content still looks good compared to how they are scaled on modern TVs.

Have you considered a rabbit-ear antenna to watch any local PBS station in addition to Passport? A lot of PBS stations do carry other networks that may not stream on Passport. My local station, for example, carries World and Create, which I have yet to find in Passport.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
I admit, I really do need to get in the habit of watching PBS programming, since it can be a nice break from the usual commercial fluff on the major networks. My local PBS station has the main channel, World, Create, 24/7 PBS Kids, and two digital audio channels. The TV channels are all 720p HD.
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
If possible, you should also see if you can get a rabbit ear antenna + amplifier to pick up local PBS stations free over-the-air. I also have PBS Passport, and I recently ordered a much larger indoor antenna in the hope I can pick up local PBS channels (in addition a few other commercial channels)

Of course, this scenario only works with the TV. You may still need the USB A-to-C adapter when on the go. I wonder if a Bluetooth mouse would work better though?
Wade Brandis (@wb8979.bsky.social) reply parent
Building on the wireless mouse suggestion, the Switch 2 dock has USB ports. I think you can still get a wireless mouse but simply plug the receiver into one of the dock's USB ports. You should then be able to use the mouse in Mario Paint!

So instead of a Switch 2, I got a whole load of new retro games, another Famiclone for the collection, and a new and hopefully better TV antenna. . I think the Switch 2 will become more appealing in time, but the one thing that will make me spring for one ASAP is a Lite variant... with D-Pad. 😊
