Thank you! I think it is disappointing that the effect may be temporary. People watch FOX News. I would be interested to see more, and will have to check my university’s library, for people that go without cable news and not just switch networks.
I could see the effects being really hard to measure as well. What exactly constitutes “left” and “right” can be nebulous and can change over time. I.e., nationalizing industries in the US seems very suddenly to be a right wing thing.
This is something that I’m curious about. Does the effect from something like The Sun or Fox News fade quickly? Or is it resilient over time? Like, if someone were to just stop watching Fox, would their views shift to the left quickly, slowly, or not at all?
That is not an exhaustive list, but it is important for us to remember that no one single thing got us into this mess, and no one single thing will get us out.
It will also involve working with community leaders and organizations (religious leaders, aldermen, state/federal reps, etc.) to make sure that there is messaging and support for the community so they know what rights and protections they will have available to them.
It will also require law firms, working pro bono if possible, willing to represent people who have been denied their right to vote to make sure that they get it before certification, which takes a long time in the US
Anything that might cause an ICE agent to rethink their actions would be helpful.
I think it has to be a combination of things. It has to involve letting the ICE agents know they are breaking state law if they deny people their right to vote (assuming laws like that exist, I’m not a lawyer) and aggressively enforcing those laws

The reason the National Guard haven’t been in Chicago the past few weeks has been directly because JB Pritzker and Brandon Johnson have pushed back so aggressively. And CPD won’t be joining ICE in immigration raids
Isn’t this another action that would disenfranchise the very voters that he has relied on to win elections too? I don’t doubt that some Republican state legislators would comply to please him, but I’m not sure it would work out for them.

I think that may explain part of the Fenno paradox here. If you associate crime with black people, but live in rural Illinois you’re going to say it isn’t a problem in your neighborhood because black people don’t liver there. They live in Chicago
Even though the pollster is asking about crime, the responder is using their own definition. Same thing with the concept of a “problem.” What is and is not a problem can mean different things to different people.
Clearly “crime” means something different to different people. To some it seems to mean ‘violence,’ to others it seems to mean ‘homelessness,’ or ‘poor people.’ To some it just means ‘black people.’
Very interesting and I am glad that my fellow citizens are not in favor of the military occupying American cities. However it does get me thinking of the paradox described and how it might connect to the social construct of crime.

That type of analysis obfuscates analysis of the actual roster for what it is (it's probably bad). Pundits do this all the time with the actions of politicians.
Case in point: On Felger and Mazz they were discussing how the Patriots' roster cuts were "political" in the sense that certain players made the roster just to make the general manager look good.
There's this real similarity between current political punditry and sports talk radio in my mind. It's not necessarily horserace coverage, but its looking at all events through the lens of established narratives rather than critically assessing what is actually happening.
This is absolutely what is happening -- as part of my work, we've been doing events across the country and people are scared and angry and worried and pissed the fuck off. Instead of reflecting that, the pundits and entrenched beltway figures have made up a guy to represent.
When these ghouls talk about "Common Good" or "Public Good" they mean "Good for people who are above a certain tier of society." Wouldn't the well-being of the people who are being sacrificed be part of the "Common Good?" These freaks would say "No."
