We have the Federal NICS reporting system, which includes records for mental illness, but the system is only as good as the info it contains. One has to have been committed to a mental institution or declared incompetent by a court. Not everyone who has mental illness gets reported for either.

At least BK questioned the “homicide” side effect and now it is on the record. I am no SSRIologist but I don’t recall homicidal ideation as a side effect of SSRIs. Such a side effect would surely have counted them out of such common use by now.

There is a grain of truth here It is difficult to quantify - wide variation in cohort studies - but SSRIs cause an increase in violent acts in a small subset of 15-24s. One theory is that suicidal/homicidal ideation is already present and SSRI gives depressed person enough energy to do something

This effect is smaller for SSRIs than for opioids, benzodiazepines or amphetamines - and is tiny compared to the real issue of high capacity semi-automatic guns - but there is a black box warning on SSRIs to monitor for suicidal behavior in under 25s. Of course, SSRIs save far more than they harm.

There is NO warning of homicidal intentions. Yes, people who are depressed and take SSRIs can experience increased depression and suicidal thoughts. But that is why doctors start people at a small dose and ask at monthly checkup if the person has suicidal thoughts.
