Fan of Doctor Who, history and generally nerdy stuff. Left the bird after some unpleasantness. Slightly left of centre left. All views my own and don't reflect my employer or anyone else.

Largely Kermode who originated this view, I think, as he believes The Exorcist is the greatest film ever made. I think he has since said it isn't even the worst film he's seen any more. I believe he apologised to John Boorman about it.

This is driven by logistics I expect. My other half works for the council in housing and has a nightmare with single male applicants who when granted are allocated a one bedroom council house and then want a 5 bedroom house for their extended family that the council is unable to provide.

Great. The bus that is always late or cancelled would cost me less. I'll tell my boss that when he's yelling at me for being late.

Fascists love being treated as bad guys, love pearl clutching. It makes them seem serious and professional. They hate being mocked. If people think fascism is ridiculous, they are far less likely to get caught up in it.

So what do we do, Umberto Eco?
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
Our community needs houses and public transport links, but the minority nimby groups always prevent them happening. Anything is better than "save this random threadbare" field campaigns taking precedence over everything.
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
I assume it means literally nothing we need in the country from housing to transport to infrastructure gets built because nobody knows the difference between green belt and a threadbare field with one goat. We're an embarrassment compared to most of Europe.

Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah I agree that someone with zero interest in football or team preference would do much better analysis. But would they want to.
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
Nimbyism ruined HS2. Just as it does pretty much all infrastructure projects and spending, housing, transport etc here in the UK.
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
Because there's always unlimited money and infrastructure investment for London. None for us plebs up North.

Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
Its a very mixed bag. There are things about it I love and think are very good, other things I think are misfires. Its certainly better than the Rankin Bass bollocks. Not a patch on the Jackson trilogy though.

All the people saying "bad teacher", did you not have any lazy dickheads in your classes at school? The best teacher in the world can't teach someone who doesn't want to learn.
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
The latter I suspect. Also seemingly the subjects where the need to have actual qualifications of any kind are slightly lax

Sure, but nobody microwaves bloody sponges, and those who do clearly have way too much time on their hands. Most busy workong families with kids dont have spotless houses and manage to clean sporadically yet are not perpetually ill. Too many people paranoid as a result of dettol adverts.

Finally finished, Isaiah, it is beautifully written, full of terrific verses, and incredible imagery, retaining a real power, but far, far too long. We get it, we've forsaken God, Israel will have liberation, the Messiah is coming. Also, clearly more than one author, one of whom is not as good.

Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, I've long held this view. Not the only reason he lost though. A lot of people just superficially voted for a well turned out posh boy over a grumpy Scotsman. 2010 is rarely talked about as a key election but it really is. All the problems we have had since started there.
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
To the extent that you would think slavery was entirely invented by the British and had never occurred anywhere else in the world or at any point in history prior to that.
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
This wasn't my experience at all. We did empire almost exclusively in relation to slavery.
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
My history teacher (best teacher I ever had) was a Hobsbawmian Marxist. We covered a lot on 19th century stuff but it was very history from below. I dont recall every studying anything at school that was about exceptionalism. The empire was covered in the context of slavery.
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
When I was at school (I left in 2006) we only did it once in KS3 I think. I remember doing a lot about the industrial revolution (roads, canals, railways, education, factory acts, cholera, enclosure, reform acts, chartism) and also Ireland 1801 to 1997, the unification of Italy, France 1815 to 1848.

Then you're absolutely soulless. Its beautifully written, animated and acted. It deals with big issues in a way that makes sense to kids and teaches them good behaviour and coping strategies in a way that few other kids programmes do. Yeah, Bandit is an ideal but all role models are.

I know a number of people who work for the HO who are tearing their hair at out at the yawning gulf between the clear trajectory of progress, progress which they have worked themselves sick to achieve, and the way the media is uniformly reporting things.
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
Im such a partisan I left the party this year after nearly 20 years of membership. Believe me I know how shit the government is. What I cannot fathom is how anyone looks at reform and sees a valid alternative. Especially those that fell for and were burned by Johnson.
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
The thing is, though, what the government is doing is working. Small boats' arrivals are falling, deportations of foreign offenders have increased, the asylum backlog is a shadow of what it was a year ago. Asylum claims are now being processed in months rather than years. Report that.
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
Adam sort of assumes in this that the people likely to vote for reform actually give a shit about things like human rights or the suffering of foreigners, though. Why would telling people who often gleefully say we should sink the boats that this policy will cause suffering have any effect?
Spectrox Celery (@whoniversal.bsky.social) reply parent
The people who want to vote for Reform don't give a shit about that. They don't view migrants as people.
