There are so many takes on Zohran but the story is really simple. He’s very positive and it’s clear he wants to build bridges and help people. He doesn’t want to settle factional scores, he doesn’t want the glorious revolution. Just accomplishing good things for constituents.

It’s hard to explain how much respect I have for Nadler here. He is not only putting his own interests behind those of the country and his constituents, but he’s accepting that a thing he believed was wrong…and doing something about it.
Mike I get it but, instead, what if we took each and every criticism as equally valid? Looking into the sources seems hard and like you might judge people.
It’s frustrating that the internet vision of liberals thinks this interaction would be an unforgivable slight but the actual reality is this is a relatable and funny experience of people who want to be kind to others.
I’m a millennial and the therefore allowed to earnest-post. But this is a really good observation and the viewpoint of like 98% of the liberals I know. It’s OK to try to be better but recognize practical limitations and just say “that’s too much work” or “this is weirding people out.”
It’s incredible ego. Their only lens to view the world is “I am incredible - therefore other smart people will see that. If anyone doesn’t like me I can ignore them because they have proven themselves unworthy.”
This linked post is a great example of this phenomenon. Every part is this is absolutely true. How is it difficult to criticize the liars doing it? I think it's all the same dynamic. To criticize the incorrect understanding of the world would be to criticize the people who hold it - so no one does

This realization unlocks so much of politics - I've always known it about the right ("virtue signaling" is an insane phrase that could only be created by sociopaths). But clearly it's true of much of the center as well that had mostly aesthetic complaints about Trump.
For whatever reason left-of-center politicians refuse to hit the same "my opponents are just wrong and here's why" button that conservatives pound constantly. Maybe the "deplorables" thing scared them? But it's not sustainable for all these national conversations to only criticize the left.
It's two sides of the same coin. And I think it mostly comes from this desire we saw in all of the 2016 "conversation in a diner" pieces - the belief that there must be SOMETHING valuable being expressed by these current right-wing movements.

It's darkly funny that the failure mode of our Constitution seems to be that our elected officials are not selfish enough. The Founders assumed didn't seem to consider what would happen if a bunch of Congressmen banded together and said the policy goal was more important than their power.

I think it's one of two things: 1. Some of these people (like, I think, MattY) simply have conservative social views of their own and are trying to accomplish them. 2. There is a naive idea that a bargain could work and help on net - the logic there would be sound, it's just not available.
"I want to hurt people I don't like" vs. "no you shouldn't do that" isn't likely to create symmetrical responses.
We have friends with a trans daughter who moved to Boston last year. It, like so much of the current Republican platform, is solely about hurting people they dislike. No part of it is about "safety."
This seems like clear evidence that the warnings of the left were in fact correct - incremental movements right will not mollify the right, they will simply cede rights. The Argument has some very prominent voices in favor of that approach - I would love to see them address Rufo’s comment.

After a little more thought I think the Trump effect is impossible to ignore here. Even in the example, negative tweets about Trump from MCs would be included as toxic, but negative tweets FROM TRUMP are excluded.

This is a truly wild thing to write in the period in which conservatives elected Donald Trump:

I mean I’m sure this is rhetorical but it’s a combination of a) the belief that politics is a science that can be run by data (this is the people pushing it), ignoring persuasion and even change over time and b) it’s an excuse not to do anything scary, which Dem electeds love.
It’s one of those things where I can’t tell people how I really feel about it before they watch because it’s just too much pressure on it.
It’s really good. I was way close to their age the first time I watched it and, by comparison, had my life together. Couldn’t get past being mad at them for bad decisions. With some time it’s clear I was being an asshole and some distance let me see the characters with less judgment.

I was in Tanzania in July and was struck by how much the solar advancements are going to transform the country. It's kind of the same thing that happened with their phone service - most of the country just skipped over landlines and has cell phones. A solar microgrid can be very practical.
Like the Jeffries statement, this bugs me because it makes it sound like the problem is injustice toward one person (or the group they represent). But this is much bigger than that! It's about the economic effects for everyone of the President controlling the Fed - illegally.
