People talk about it as if it's one of those "here to stay" things but... that's not what I'm seeing. The other part of this is that having these tools enter my work space has been a net negative and I just personally, genuinely resent them on a professional level. Even besides environmental stuff.
and so arguing in depth about it feels kinda like wasting my time: I think the whole thing is going away literally no matter what I say or do (and I can talk about those reasons!), and that I think investing your workflow and career in those tools, and the harm they can do to YOU, is kinda bad.
I appreciate that. I think my current stance is that I strongly believe it's an unsustainable bubble completely beyond my control, and that the technology itself is not able to outlast the bubble except in certain extremely niche cases that are uninteresting to me, and to most people.
no yeah it's definitely a conversation I'm at least completely exhausted with having. I've found that just going off and finding positive outlets for that energy is much healthier :P

I have firsthand witnessed some very negative results from the text stuff, fwiw. To the point where I think it's inappropriate for someone using these tools to request my time/help on anything.

I don’t know what kind of power is needed to address the fundamental problem here (the most addressable level is likely unregulated corporatism?): It’s a huge, overwhelming problem. I genuinely don’t know what to do there. But also I don’t think critiquing peer participation in this stuff is wrong
*fix* it. It’s just a bandaid mostly on my own ethical issues with it and it creates unpleasant friction with segments of my community (though, tbh, I have been valuing my tech peers less and less lately, because they keep doing shit like this, and focusing on other circles in my life).

Anyone out there have experience cooking up little "appliance" indie IoT things where you just set up a really simple image of some sort with some prepackage software, ship it to someone, and they can do the familiar discovery-and-setup flow and bam, they have some kind of service? Can we talk?
