If you’re asking at that level of abstraction, AI won’t be any better than Boolean. For that reason, most legal research AI tools don’t just provide cases. They attempt to analyze and select the “best” cases - and they just aren’t capable of doing that properly.
Or I’ll ask it to provide state not federal authority on a topic. Half the cases it provides are federal. I find it only useful if I know a particularly rule of law exists but can’t recall the case. It might give me a usable case slightly faster than a Boolean search.
The problem is that AI legal research is not close to being able to properly evaluate cases at 2. I occasionally ask Westlaw’s AI tool to look at an issue when my research feels stuck. Half the time, it tells me a case says X when it actually says the exact opposite. /1
