And it really is a testament to Kendrick’s abilities that he is such a complex and conscious lyricist who has also managed to accumulate the broad appeal that he has.
Yeah, because it happens enough at this point that I notice it. This person doesn’t listen to much rap ≠ this person is a fake fan of this artist ≠ this person’s taste is bad. If anything, it means I sometimes get to recommend some artists they may end up loving as well.
Do you want me to acknowledge that there are fans for whom Kendrick is their number one that also listen to other rappers? Because that is true. I acknowledge that, easily. I just also happen to meet a LOT of people who don’t listen to much outside of him. It’s fine, either way.
It’s not a contest. It’s okay to listen to only one artist out of a genre, even if I do wish a greater amount of artists could get more love from general audiences.

He is (1) an amazing artist who does deserve the success and recognition he has, who has (2) a LOT of fans for whom he is their only venture into his genre. That’s fine. It doesn’t make them bad people or make it any less okay for them to be fans of his.
Then I didn’t word what I said the correct way at all whatsoever.
This happens to a degree in every genre, in which artists who make incredible stuff hardly get a crumb because they’re not one of The Big Names.
It’s fine, if that’s the case. It’s not a moral failing or anything. All I’m saying is that rap continues to be a genre that has a *broad* appeal that sometimes doesn’t go deep enough past a few artists to be appreciated for all the great stuff being made within it.
Why would you get it more if I said Drake? He’s definitely another artist like this, since he’s also a giant in the industry that EVERYONE has heard by now. They both attract a lot of folks for whom they’re the only rappers they listen to. I just happen to like Kendrick and hate Drake.

Actually, here’s this: Tell me your favorite rapper is Kendrick Lamar, and I WILL assume you don’t listen to much of the genre. I love Kendrick, but he’s a very accessible artist that attracts a lot of “I hate rap except for…” fans.
