Actually, here’s this: Tell me your favorite rapper is Kendrick Lamar, and I WILL assume you don’t listen to much of the genre. I love Kendrick, but he’s a very accessible artist that attracts a lot of “I hate rap except for…” fans.

Saying you listen to Kendrick Lamar back in 2014 vs saying you listen to him now is a huge difference.
YEP
His songs on Black Panther opened him up to a much wider audience which is good, but that also means Disney fans know about Section.80
Honestly, I hope more and more people listen to Section.80
Actually yeah that would be preferable to them thinking his Drake beef songs are his only songs
He's not my favourite but I mean, his catalogue is outstanding, he's revolutionary for the genre and incredibly versatile too, doesn't it make sense that he'd be a huge chunk of people's favourite rapper rankings? I'd definitely say Alright and Count Me Out are two of my favourite ever rap tracks
He’s one of the best of the best. People also don’t venture into the genre past him enough. I think both things are true.
But I feel like that's just discouraging newcomers from delving deeper into the scene by judging them based on who their favourite rapper is, specially when he's a perfectly valid pick for it. If you'd posted this and said Drake instead I'd get it more, but ehhhhh
Why would you get it more if I said Drake? He’s definitely another artist like this, since he’s also a giant in the industry that EVERYONE has heard by now. They both attract a lot of folks for whom they’re the only rappers they listen to. I just happen to like Kendrick and hate Drake.
Because Drake has always felt more superficial when it comes to hip-hop. He's not been part of the culture for years and consistently tried to distance himself from it in order to gain mass appeal. If someone tells me their favourite rapper is Drake THEN I'd go "okay, yeah, you probably don't -
listen to much". If they say Kendrick, I don't really see the judgement.
Accessible isn't necessarily bad. There's a lot of music fans that believe unlistenable stuff is a badge of honour. I listen to a lot of noise and industrial music, various forms of extreme metal, and I CANNOT STAND people who pull the "fake fan" card because they don't listen to deep cuts.
I was that kid in school, and it made me precisely zero friends... It's ALMOST on the edge of sports fan tribalism and it's so knuckle-draggingly asinine.
It’s not even that. I find that they don’t give rap outside of Kendrick a chance because they tend to perceive it as far more inaccessible than it actually is.
If they don't find it relatable or they just don't seek it out, it's clear they only pick up what they hear via social media/radio/tv and honestly, that's okay. I like to dig a little more, but that's how it goes.
It’s fine, if that’s the case. It’s not a moral failing or anything. All I’m saying is that rap continues to be a genre that has a *broad* appeal that sometimes doesn’t go deep enough past a few artists to be appreciated for all the great stuff being made within it.
This happens to a degree in every genre, in which artists who make incredible stuff hardly get a crumb because they’re not one of The Big Names.
lmao this take is so weird but whatever
🤷
i talk to a lot of hip hop heads and tpab constantly ranks in their favs but i'll be sure to let them know they're all fake
who's your favorite rapper? i want to hear the right answer to this question, since there is one apparently
@kc.diaper.church
of course it's a white guy
Then I didn’t word what I said the correct way at all whatsoever.
clearly
people are so afraid to talk about the music they like because RYM / Patrician Music Chartposting bros who dominate the discourse treat taste-having like it's a contest. that's MY dangerous music take.
It’s not a contest. It’s okay to listen to only one artist out of a genre, even if I do wish a greater amount of artists could get more love from general audiences.
He is (1) an amazing artist who does deserve the success and recognition he has, who has (2) a LOT of fans for whom he is their only venture into his genre. That’s fine. It doesn’t make them bad people or make it any less okay for them to be fans of his.
okay so to summarize, kendrick is: 1) One of the greatest ever 2) Only your favorite if you listen to the billboard top 100
Do you want me to acknowledge that there are fans for whom Kendrick is their number one that also listen to other rappers? Because that is true. I acknowledge that, easily. I just also happen to meet a LOT of people who don’t listen to much outside of him. It’s fine, either way.
okay but by your own confession you "WILL assume"
Yeah, because it happens enough at this point that I notice it. This person doesn’t listen to much rap ≠ this person is a fake fan of this artist ≠ this person’s taste is bad. If anything, it means I sometimes get to recommend some artists they may end up loving as well.
I’d rather this than 21 savage / Uzi
