What reminded me of this rural example was your mention of market distortion. What’s a greater market distortion? Manufacturers pushing local techs out of business and hiring them as wage earners? Or government insisting on fair competition? Your point about religion and culture is spot on.
As long as rural people vote for politicians who want government to be too small to do anything about this kind of thing it will continue.
Farm-town high schools have farm and automotive tech buildings bigger than their basketball arenas. Shifting business-ownership of tractor maintenance from local businesses to the manufacturers is part of the hollowing-out local economies.
Banks will call in the loan on a tractor with a void warranty. Manufacturers insist their tractors are now high tech products and those simple farmers can’t manage the maintenance — meanwhile, farmers have master’s degrees and deal with a lot of tech.
Consider the “right to repair” issue. In the past, rural areas had many independent businesses who sent repair technicians to farms to repair tractors. Now, manufacturers insist that if those technicians are not their employees, the tractor warranty is void.
A common corollary to this fallacy is that clergy are experts on morality the way that MDs are experts on medicine. The idea that “if you have a moral question, see your clergy…” Bunk!
