Strange New Worlds has produced some of the best episodes of Trek I've ever seen, and some of the absolute worst. Mostly they're inbetween. I really wish this wasn't a prequel show with established characters, I feel like that'd help a lot.
Red Comet (@anzable.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not saying to do nothing, I'm saying to take actions that are meaningful, and avoid harm where possible. Advocating for a bunch of service members to be homeless because they happened to get picked for Trump's dick measuring isn't helpful to anything.
Red Comet (@anzable.bsky.social) reply parent
Pretty sure some national guard guys deciding not to pick up trash in DC isn't going to save democracy. Their refusal of orders here won't help anything, it'll only harm them. It's easy to say you'd have the principles to ruin your life behind a keyboard.

An ethical protest means they still have to follow the orders as long as they're lawful. They've no doubt complained to their command, their command has no doubt complained up the chain, but beyond that there's not much that can be done.
Red Comet (@anzable.bsky.social) reply parent
refusing a lawful order is grounds for anything from non judicial punishment to discharge. A dishonorable discharge or an other-than-honorable discharge can be as bad as a felony conviction for getting jobs after you get out. You're asking for mass joblessness for veterans. We have enough of that.
Red Comet (@anzable.bsky.social) reply parent
They’re not illegal orders, though. Immoral, certainly, unpalatable definitely, but they are the legal orders of the lawfully elected president.

There’s still a few good story driven and character driven anime out there, but it’s the golden needle in an ever growing haystack of action driven spectacle and gooner driven weirdness
Red Comet (@anzable.bsky.social) reply parent
Classic gundam really didn't look great, but it was compelling, character driven. Then there was this brief renaissance where it got popular enough on story that they could afford to add in some spectacle, and you got REALLY GOOD animation with your good story. But now story is less important.
Red Comet (@anzable.bsky.social) reply parent
Anime in general has changed too, though. More focus is on spectacle and animation flexes than actual story. Compelling characters and real emotion gets sidelined for making the super attack look cool and having the voice actor blow out their voice on an attack name scream.
Red Comet (@anzable.bsky.social) reply parent
Gundam isn't about war any more, it's about corporate sponsorships and back alley brawls but with mecha, about schoolgirls and crushes and corporate dystopianism. That doesn't make it bad, it just makes it fundamentally different from the old Gundam shows. That makes it difficult to compare.
Red Comet (@anzable.bsky.social) reply parent
A lot of what shaped the original Gundam was its proximity to the war, and how everyone working on it felt about that war. But it's been so long since Japan has seen war that nobody working on these shows remembers it. So what the show is about has changed significantly.
Red Comet (@anzable.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the issue with more modern mecha anime is that the people making them are fundamentally different than the people who made the original mecha anime. That shift in creators means a shift in tone and message, and therefore a shift in audience.
