Lots of reasons for doom, but Putin has already lost this particular war. His objective was to pull Ukraine back into the renewed Russian empire. He has permanently driven Ukraine away from Moscow and galvanised Europe to coalesce as an anti-Moscow pole. This is true whatever happens to end the war.
This isn’t bad luck or coincidence or predestination. This is our choice. To live in a nation where our leaders teach hate, and military style guns are everywhere.

I used to think Ukraine didn’t fit in NATO - it was as likely to side with Russia in a conflict, and were we ever really going to put NATO boots on the ground in Ukraine? That was was probably right pre Orange revolution, but now - they would be such an addition to NATO and strengthen it massively.

And if the rumour that it requires spending $100b on US weapons, is correct, I would not bother with the US at all, and spend that cash developing Euro defence industries so Europe is self reliant, rather than have weapons which require US consent for launch codes and tech support.

The reason, Mr Trump, is the Russian soldiers were attacking Ukraine, and the Ukrainians were defending their homeland.
Trump needs to be very aware that if he forces Ukraine to hand over land, and Russia takes it, re-arms and comes back for more, his name will be forever be associated with being the 21st century’s Chamberlain.
Why spend $800b pa if you won’t use it even in this situation? And this applies to Biden as well. I don’t get it.
USA could give Ukraine $100b (maybe $200b) worth of decent weapons, and it won’t make a dent in the US armoury that has an $800b per annum budget. Defeating Russia in Ukraine 🇺🇦 would allow the US to halve their defence spending. Give $200b already spent, save $400b new spend every year.
