As far as I understand, giraffes are very rarely put down in zoos; I belive they are moved around. Which is, btw, really complicated because they can't be sedated. I think the way zoos work is that they buy the livestock that they feed to their predators. No different from the way humans are fed.

This is not an option in a zoo. They keep one bull surrounded by a group of females. That one bull gets to impregnate the females, but obvisouly not if they receive the treatment you suggest. Young bulls are removed when they come of age, otherwise they start fighting.
When you say "things you can do" you make it sound as if there were several options. There weren't. Sedating a giraffe is dangerous because it can break its neck when falling. Besides, sending signals should not have priority over animal safety.
Most inventions are preceded by similar stuff a decade earlier :-)

Except the motivation is not to feed the lions. The animal is being put down for other reasons, and instead of it being incireated or otherwise s´destroyed, its carcass is used to feed predators.

Industries world wide kill healthy animals, feed most of them to humans, while a substantial part is just going to waste in people's fridges.

They did not put down that giraffe in order to feed it to the lions. It had to be put down to avoid inbreeding. That is how it ended up being fed to the lions who I'm sure lived better for it. #animalwelfare
Imgine you keep rabbits; you started out with just a pair, and now you have 20. Nobody wants them, you can't keep them. You take them to the zoo, they are euthanized and then fed to predators. Cycle of life. That's the story.
First, predators need to eat meat. So they cannot be fed without animals being put down. Second, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs tend overbreed, and the owners need to have them put down. Better to have their carcasses fed to predators that have them incinerated. Don't you think?

I'm just saying there are different types of prison. If Aalborg Zoo decides to feed their predators chicken and rabbits, I reckon they aren't jeopardizing the animals' health. After all, the animals have to be a live and good looking for people to want to look at them.
And as for the health of the lions I believe Danish zoos are all equipped with veterinarians and experts who know what they are doing. It's all very regulated, no roadside zoos or people keeping exotic animals in their back yard.

I have to say that I think the sentence the 18-year-old eventually got was fair. Locking him up for 25 years would have been insane.

I believe most animals in the zoo were born in the zoo by parents who were born in the zoo. Releasing them into the wild is not an option.
