"RFK Jr has no formal training in either medicine or science" has to be one of the sentences that bothers me the most Would it be better if he were an engineer? A geologist? A physicist? Do chemists have a better chance at detecting "mitochondrial abnormalities"? Science is not "better at thinking"!

Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, but that is not in the Bible. As I said, catholicism depends on a long tradition of thinkers, not just the Bible. Most of the awful things in catholicism are not mentioned in the bible
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
You should tell the Republicans that.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
It didn't help that the spanish destroyed many places of worship, but many monastoc orders, like the jesuits, took a less violent approach to conversion.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
Cool. I'm latinoamerican, and I learned the history from highschool and a couple more umiversity courses and let me tell you, it wasn't really that important. The conversion to catholicism took centuries.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
And for example, there's nothing in the bible that forbids women from beinf priests. There's almost nothig in the Bible about the Church, to be honest.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
Actually, they don't. The fact that the last two popes have been "progressive", and that there're factions inside the church tells another story.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
Was this influenced by his christian faith or by good all fashioned antisemtism? As far as I know he didn't try to convert any jews, unlike the Spanish expulsion of the jews.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
You need to separate how politics use religions as tools for powdr vs a true religious fervour war.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
The spaniah conquest had very little to do with religion. It served as an excuse, but Fray Bartolomé de las Casas was a loud voice against the spanish atrocitiea. Most colonization is due to resources, little to do with religion.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
So WW2 was some sort of Holy War? Hitler invaded Europe to kill jews? Betrayed Stalin to kill some more Jews? Bombarded England to get the britiah jews?
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
Catholics are very far from fundamentalists. If you ask almoat any other christian denomination, catholics are basically devil worshipers.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
Wasn't aware the first and second world wars were in the name of faith
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
You will find that most systems and institutions are: a-made by men, and b-patriarchal. This happens across the globe and across time.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
The most relevant ethical system in catholicism is not even biblical but greek. And ot only got into the church because Aquinas read some muslim thinkers who saved Aristotle from obscurity.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
Have you heard about faith?
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
The priests I have known that have left the church are mostly because interal issues rather than "bible issues". Sure, the Bible matters, but most of catholic doctrine stems from millenia of discussions.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
Point being? You think catholic priests are not aware of these issues? Many of them are historians, anthropologists or archologists. None of this is secret.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, catholic priests study the bible for years, along with theology and philosophy. I think there might be something else behind belief.

I'm not interested in the actual structure of judaism. I'm pointing out that buddism is very much a religion, even in the most hierarquical ways possible. It's not mostly thinking.

The fact that there are some doctors that are exceptionally good at their thing is much more akin to a miracle than any scientific method. Some doctors really are THAT good.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
Personally, Mrs @karamcnair.bsky.social, I believe one of the key factors that define Buddism as a religion is its capacity for sincretism. Not only there are many sects with different canonical texts, but it extended to many other regions quite succesfully.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
Hey, @karamcnair.bsky.social, I'm asking, do you want the academic response or the short rebutal?
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
First and foremost, it's built upon an existing religion, Induhism. And though the Buddha did not worry himself with the Indu pantheon, he did adapt the afterlife and ethical principles from it.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
The reason Buddism is NOT just thinking and very much a religion is not only because some versions of it have characteristics similar to catholicism, but for many other reasons.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
You don't now anything about me so you should had better shut the fuck up. But fuck it, you came looking for a fight, so you'll get one.
Benjamin Ibañez (@bibanez.bsky.social) reply parent
Point being, there's a clear and differentiated route for those who are "teachers" of the religious doctrine. I'm don't know if that is the same for buddism. There's probably and equivalent.
