First and foremost, it's built upon an existing religion, Induhism. And though the Buddha did not worry himself with the Indu pantheon, he did adapt the afterlife and ethical principles from it.
The reason Buddism is NOT just thinking and very much a religion is not only because some versions of it have characteristics similar to catholicism, but for many other reasons.
