Vanaf deze week ben ik dat dus gaan tracken. Binnenkort zal ik de eerste resultaten hiervan delen. Niet iedereen die reageert, gaat ook direct naar de website. Er zijn ook veel stille meelezers natuurlijk. Soms scoort een stuk niet op SM, maar krijg je wel voldoende bereik.

Hier aan LSU geef ik colleges over vroegmodern Europa. Een van die is "The Dutch Republic and Empire, 1550-1800." Meestal krijg ik 20 of zo studenten. Ze hebben absoluut geen voorkennis behalve misschien iets over de kunst van de 17e eeuw. Ik lok ze naar binnen met Rembrandt en Vermeer.

True for me too - I get more readers off of bluesky now that twitter, even though I still have more notional followers on The Bad Place. Bluesky doesn't suppress links, which has to be a big part of it, but also I generally see more engagement here.

Louisiana State University is in 1860 gesticht en is de grootste universiteit in de staat-40,000 studenten. Onze hoofdcampus bevindt zich in Baton Rouge, de hoofdstad van de staat, langs de Mississippi rivier-"Big Muddy" (in de achtergrond op deze foto). Mijn faculteit zit in het omcirkeld gebouw.

I agree with the essence of this but: there is a lot of privilege involved in a) having colleagues; b) having / building a scholarly network and community; c) being able to trust these people with your ideas. We need to think about how to help people build and access these types of networks.

Agreed. But it´s also that complexity that makes me somewhat hesitant to automatically side with one with discipline against the other (NB the original post related to a case of history vs epidemiology, not broader humanities vs. broader STEM, BS or SS).
Exactly, because the mechanics are the same I´m not (yet) willing to argue that disciplines in the humanities are currently under graver threat and duress than disciplines in STEM, biomedical sciences or social sciences. The culture wars have hit their reputation and public funding too.

Meanwhile engineering has been haunted by the tech bro´s continuous and ever louder claims that you´re better of getting rich with them than pursuing independent academic research. Same for biosciences.
Indeed we aren´t: cuts in the UK are also fairly cross-disciplinary, for example. And culture-war attacks have been leveled againts social scientists (legal studies and education experts primarily), medical studies (massively after the pandemic, but before also involving gender care).
