~20 years ago my uni had Computer Science under liberal arts college and Computer Engineering under Engineering college. CprE students were constantly baffled why ppl chose ComSci and took lots of electives. They bitched constantly about the few electives they had to take. I doubt it's better now

I see 2 paths; virtue and pragmatism. I agree that all education is virtuous. On pragmatism; In modern times class has flattened out into 2 groups, and my family definitely aren't moving up to the other one. But, all things being equal, would I want my kids to be 1 disaster away from ruin, or 2?
it's my cohort. Admittedly, I work in tech and when I was getting into it, a degree was an absolute requirement by HR departments, so this could all just be selection bias. I know a lot of younger people are struggling, including college grads with a mountain of debt. I had a ton of debt too.
I feel like it's abandoning them. What do the proponents tell their own high school-aged kids? Do they really tell their kids to aim for a middling career? Are no-college people NIMBYs about it? God I feel so out of touch. What am I missing? I know college is expensive. So is a low-paying career.
