In 1936 the UK for one could not have prosecuted a war - it lack the equipment, industrial supply chain etc. Chamberlain pushing defence spend from under 3% to 9% provided the essential foundation. This went up another 3-fold and only by 1943 did UK industrial production outstrip Germany's.

Some years ago, in my town, a local politician threw in the trash the meager properties of a homeless person. He got condemned by everyone, including his own very rightwing party, and fined for using the wrong trash container. No one defended him. Trieste is very far from California.

Quite simple. Birchall is white and works in the UK. Recall that the material scientist who provided the plastic tracheas was sanctioned by UCL. Important distinction, that scientist was not white. HoL doubtless awaits Birchall and UCL governance will be given a medal.

I wonder if part of it is also that (some of) those attending the asylum seeker protests explicitly or implicitly threaten violence and disorder. They are frightening, and politicians both stoke and fear them, in a way that polite peaceful protesters simply aren’t.
