I fall on the side of public ridicule vs ignoring them. Their positions are so confused and backwards even they can't reasonably defend them. There's no requirement to be right in order to debate. If someone is informed and believes their opinion, that's fine. The problem with this so far that I've seen is this group he's debating is 100% feels based with no clue about reality. Uninformed belligerance.
I applaud you for taking the fight to them directly. My issue is more their apparent unwillingness to question their own positions. People can be wrong, can be taught wrong, but if they're unwilling to ever be open to the idea that they're wrong, they are a lost cause.
