The generation after mine (I'm mid 50s) has been taught with computers being more & more influential. That's led to people being taught to think in more binary fashions. Either 1 or 0. That is what powers the modern world. As a result we've lost all nuance and any appreciation that there is a scale
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Genuinely thought you had reproduced some of them here. My personal Mandela effect
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
I was looking for a coupe of threads to share with peeps, particularly Alfred seacat and some of the other navy ones
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Is your post of history threads somewhere handy? Not your pinned post anymore

Whereas Burt Lancaster's last film was Field of Dreams.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Aye right. This from the guys who said we'd all be working in the metaverse by now. Jog on.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
There will be more of 'US government takes 10% ownership stake' as part of these. Which is awfully close to communism by US standards.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Or Geordies.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
So if they trip us up at the top of the stairs that’s them just throwing one away for fun?
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
This is what it was like living in Carthage while the Romans just scooted on past you in advancement.

My phone has an option to not allow emergency alerts. Which makes the system a bit pointless really.

Palgiarist. Blocked.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Well it is quite obviously ridiculous isn’t it
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Some of his Facebook vids have sweeping views of flower meadows. He's a halfwit.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, let's destroy all the meagre biodiversity in our cities. What an absolute cunt.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
I couldn't resist, so I clicked to find out and it suggested that perhaps the city had been in evacuated because of the fire on Arthur's Seat. So I called it fucking stupid and left.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
There was a satire story with a headline saying 'Edinburgh residents told its safe to return home' just after the Edinburgh festival. The AI additions on Facebook were on the list of news of 'Why was Edinburgh evacuated'.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Probably because someone's tied a Burberry scarf round his waist.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
On both sides - someone who's a bit worried about physical safety or fair competion in sport is immediately labelled as a radical terf by some people and assumed to also want trans folk wiped from society.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Exactly. And you can see how that has happened in the trans arguments.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Because you see that 'always right' attitude from both sides of any argument now. Societal, political, economic, environmental etc. It's not just a male right wing thing, and to assume it is is in itself displaying that behaviour.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
The real world is analogue, and much more subtle and varied.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
I think it's a broader worry across all of society. We're obsessively digital about everything. You're either this or that, if you're this you're assumed to tick every single box for this, if you're that you believe it eve everything that stands for. No ambiguity, no spectrum of attitudes.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
OK, that's fair. Apologies.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
I know that's SK fallacy. As with everything else labelling all terfs with one motivation and mentality is probably unhelpful.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Fella is lucky he’s not at the vet getting that out of the dog followed by a large bill and then explaining to his girlfriend why her engagement ring smells weird.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
I would genuinely prefer it if people could understand what they've done. But I realise that's not going to happen.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep, he is. It gets prominence because he's the writer of two very much loved sitcoms, Father Ted and The IT Crowd.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Yep, same type of arrogance and refusal to believe your past actions might be wrong.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Slave, not mistress
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Linehan has put himself in the position that if he ever admits he's made a mistake in any of this or wrong in any way, he has to admit to himself that he's thrown away his career, wife, home and kids for absolutely nothing. He has a certain type of male arrogance which means it'll never happen.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
This a really special white coloniser attitude you have.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh dear. Another American pining about British things they really, really don't understand.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
I’m convinced part of this is the rise of computing. As they’ve become more and more a part of everyday life, we’ve come to think a lot more digitally over the last forty years, and that’s removed nuance, moderation and compromise from our habits of thinking.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, that’s pretty much it.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d love to hear the history of the failed spider communist revolution.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Put that in caps and it sounds like Trump

In the UK the charge of corporate manslaughter can put people in prison. Just a fine in the USA.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Sorry to disappoint you but most of Britain won't read to the end of those paragraphs, let alone understand them.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Tell her why English is stupid. Tell her that it's a language that is made up of soany different influences because so many different people have come to live here over.the last thousand years. And different words got used at different times. So they ended up different.

If that lad had gone to school in Glasgow he would have had a very bad time.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Bottom line we need a proper mix of energy supply to control pricing. Many different types of generation leaves us less vulnerable to a dramatic change in any one of them.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Oh, actually that still takes you to ticket master. The bastards.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Try putting the MLB ballpark app on your phone and buying through that?
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Looks pretty good tbh
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
There is a first come first served standing area at the Rodgers Center in center field. You can buy the cheapest ticket and rock up there so long as it's not full.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
This also demonstrates just how much of an achievement it was by Sam Altman to get VC guys to laugh at him for saying something really dumb.

Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
And yet the overwhelming majority won't release the management of projects to experienced project managers. They insist on holding on to all control, including finance, resource mgmt, reporting etc. So we end up paying their wage to do those things when it could be done on a lower wage.

That's hilarious, particularly given Sugar would absolutely do something similar if given the chance.

Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, there are a few but you don't see the effect on people in their teens, twenties, thirties except in very rare cases. That may change. And become more widespread. Horrible disease.

Maybe you should go back and look at the guarantees Ukraine was given in return for giving up all of their nuclear weapons.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Not of the USA. Of Ukraine, the Baltics, Finland and large slices of Poland. Putin thinks they are Russia.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
All of the reporting at the start of the war said that China didn't want them to do it.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
You're describing war when I was talking about who was an enemy. There's a distinction there that I think you're deliberately not grasping.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Their aim for domination is very different, it relies absolutely on not wiping us out. That's new.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Fundamentally, Russia is the devil, not China. Both of us have relied on China to post this, whatever we used to do it had stuff made in China. That was wasn't the case with any existential enemy in world politics and history before now. Not with USSR, not with Nazi Germany, not with Napoleon.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
They started this war without speaking to China. Put in still believes they don't need to do that because he thinks they are on an equal footing. They're not.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
If you think the reasons China and Russia are considered enemies are the same, you indulge in very simplistic analysis.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
No. Completely different. Think about why is Russia an enemy. Then think about why China is an enemy. One is existential, the other is commercial. China would rather this war wasn't happening as it hurts their exports. Russia thinks we shouldn't exist. China thinks we should buy more stuff.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
So many people don't understand the difference. Russia is an enemy. China is a competitor They're not the same. Russia thinks some people and countries shouldn't exist. China thinks everyone should give them their money.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Why?
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
It was very noticeable that the owners of the biggest websites in the world were all invited to the inauguration, and the invites stopped when it got to Wikipedia
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Wikipedia gives you the sources it's based on and leads you to the references to check and find more detail. LLMs make their sources up. Those two things aren't the same.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
No, that's not right. Wikipedia is sourced and is open to be challenged and altered. Nobody comes back to correct when LLMs are wrong. And more than anything else that statement shows you don't really understand what LLMs are, and what they do.

Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
Sir? Should that not be 'Servant'?
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
We're still suffering from the consecutive affects of covid then the writers strike and the actors strike. Stuff that's filming now would have been written in 2023, so it's not surprising material is short.
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
And after the election, publish everything you could and say, 'see, just like we said - unaffordable, u costed, deliberate acts to sabotage your jobs, you NHS, your schools, just for the benefit of the tory party'. They weren't prepared to play dirty. And now they're in this mess
Donald (@dwmacleod.bsky.social) reply parent
I've thought, since before the election, around the time of Hunts NI cut, that Labour should have been aggressive about the Tories deliberately sabotaging the economy to undermine a future Labour government. That should have been the message, every week, over and over again
