What the hell is this obsession the NYT has with the word 'falsehoods'?

I complain about media outlets all the time, so credit where it's due to @wsj.com for this chart which says more than a thousand words could. There's no dancing around it, no explaining it away, there's just the ugly truth. www.wsj.com/wsjplus/dash...

The unemployment rate for Black college graduates 25 years and older reached 5.3% in July, according to seasonally adjusted figures from Haver Analytics, based on Labor Department data. That was up from 3.9% in May and 2.7% in February. (Unlike the figures for overall unemployment, the Labor Department doesn’t adjust these figures for the typical seasonal swings that occur from month to month.) The July rate was 1.7 percentage points higher than the unemployment rate for white workers with only a high-school diploma—the biggest gap since Labor Department records for that metric began in 1992. Post from Donald Trump on Truth Social: A really deadly weekend in Chicago. 6 dead, 27 hurt in crime sprees all over the city. Panic stricken Governor Pritzker says that crime is under control, when in fact it is just the opposite. He is an incompetent governor who should call me for help. Mayor Johnson is no better. Moody's chief economist Mark Zandi says: - We are headed for a recession -The BLS data is totally reliable- for now -The revisions are due to delayed reporting of DOGE govt layoffs -Higher tariffs are dragging down the economy 1/

Mark Zandi @Markzandi · 8h The economy is on the precipice of recession. That’s the clear takeaway from last week’s economic data dump. Consumer spending has flatlined, construction and manufacturing are contracting, and employment is set to fall. And with inflation on the rise, it is tough for the Fed to come to the rescue. Unemployment remains low, but that’s only because labor force growth has gone sideways. The foreign-born workforce is shrinking, and labor force participation is declining. Telling is the economy-wide hiring freeze, particularly for recent graduates, and the decline in hours worked. Mark Zandi @Markzandi · 8h It’s no mystery why the economy is struggling; blame increasing U.S. tariffs and highly restrictive immigration policy. The tariffs are cutting increasingly deeply into the profits of American companies and the purchasing power of American households. Fewer immigrant workers means a smaller economy.

YMMV. It can be great if the owner is great. It can be miserable if the owner is an asshat. Each job is its own thing. In a big company, your manager usually has more effect on your day to day work than the Grand Poobah does.

I agree, but devil's advocate ... Does it make sense that the black child of two doctors gets preference over child of an immigrant Vietnamese fisherman? To me this is an outlier. To people on the other side, this is what DEI is about.

The clerks where I get my lunch said a man came in last week and asked them where the public entrance to 26 Federal Plaza was. He locked his bike outside, and it’s been there since.

Be curious to hear what the same prompt would do on Claude and Gemini. I tried Claude and it seemed reasonable (but I don't know the area). All trained on pretty much the same data, but the manners are after-the-fact special sauce.

I'm using it for some programming stuff lately, and I find myself wishing it would give me a lot more push back. Of course I'm brilliant, as it keeps telling me (protests too much), but I do come up with bad approaches every now and then, and I'd like a little honest feedback on those.

If they really were losing money they would have had him off the air yesterday. Sounds like a hedge. Make Trump happy now, let the Skydance/Paramount deal happen, then see which way the wind is blowing in 10 months.

When people are incented only to meet quotas, they're not too fastidious about where they look. ICE will not collect 3,000 people per day by going where people aren't. Suspect they heard that ship crews are largely foreign (true on ocean ships, not Chicago) and are going after them.

Justice Kagan cuts to the chase: "By means of [its repeated, unexplained grants of emergency relief to the Trump administration], this Court may facilitate the permanent transfer of authority, piece by piece by piece, from one branch of Government to another."

It’s interesting that Fox is doing this while trump is suing Murdoch for $10 billion.

I'm impressed by the fact that they've even figured it out now. And I'm curious why. Has the content that a disinterested person comes across changed that much since the election?
