1 is a fun rpg that holds up for a casual playthrough; 2 has an impressive storyline but is a bit more demanding. 3 has the best 'dragon system' and a really good story as well. 4 is really the height of the series to me, though. incredibly gameplay, gorgeous, inspired design, yet faintly melancholy
