I think people have developed a completely warped expectation of what a public figure should be able to "take." Nobody does well when harassed by countless random strangers, and it's kind of ridiculous that they're expected to just because they're famous.
A lot of people wouldn't even acknowledge it EXISTS while it was at its worst. Many people will believe whatever narrative gives them permission to feel most comfortable without doing anything, even if that means material danger.
