2 years ago I went to the extension fruit growing workshop. They said that peaches in our area were marginal, and apricots and nectarines wouldn't work. The thing is, we were already successfully growing peaches, and had harvested a few apricots before our tree died in a freak snowstorm. Today: ๐ฑ๐

Whoa! Turns out it's mostly seaweed but there's also a fork and a cluster of grapes and it looks like a fungus is invading its butt. Real story - I didn't know that the oviduct was away from the poop/spinneret end, spiders are so much weirder than I thought.

I found a cat spider under the bay window and fed it a grasshopper. This thing is huge! What is inside a spider's abdomen, anyway? Is it just intestines? Do bugs even HAVE intestines? Or is it like...developing eggs? Or just sloshing soup? I'm fascinated and also slightly grossed out by it. #Invert

I don't think they're rare, but I don't remember where I got it. They're easy to grow if you have enough light for succulents/cacti and appropriate substrate.

I was fish sampling along a creek when a gang of bold little birds all jostled over drinking rights from one tiny section of streambank. There were similar places everywhere. But this was THE place. I think there were five species traveling together. ๐ชถ

No, the photo was taken in October last year in France. As you say the little buds cover the ground around the cedar tree. Our cat Misti near the cedar :) The garden becomes a carpet of cyclamens. They spill out onto the country lane where folk dig a few up for themselves.

Check out all the fun patterns and colors in these tailed frog tadpoles! This is a cryptic species that lives in such cold, turbulent streams that the males have penises for internal fertilization lest their little froggie sperms get swept away, haha. The tadpoles have suction cup mouths! ๐๐

You got it! Cyclamen flowers end up coiling and retracting back down to the ground. Once the capsules ripen, they pop open. The seeds come with a sugar coating so that ants will carry them off, nibble the coating, and then abandon them to sprout! ๐ฑ๐ #Invert

I haven't. They don't need to be in large streams, the one I'm visiting in a couple weeks is small enough to step across. However, the only iNaturalist record of D. aterrimus in the Payette River basin is from above Upper Payette Lake. So I think when you get that far south they need to be higher.

New day, new stream. Today's sampling took me to the land of spoopy puppies (Idaho giant salamanders) along with the usual complement of vibrant native trout. Gorgeous waterfalls on this creek under an ancient battlement of 150' redcedar monarchs. ๐๐

The trout was never seen again but based on what I've observed from pumping the stomachs of predatory fish it was liquefied rather quickly. The tag made it through without a hitch and ended up in an ammo can rafting down the Colorado River, hahaha.

I will admit without hesitation that I'm not like...bodily dedicated to science. Although I would do the science leg thing. And one time I swallowed a whole fish and a PIT tag to track it through my digestive system, so maybe I have intestinal parasites? But hard pass on the tarantula hawk stings.
