Still, there are some genuinely lousy places (Mogadishu comes to mind) and even the “nice bad” places like Ouaga can take an adventurous spirit to enjoy. I’ve never been to Ulan Bator, but it is the world’s coldest capital and is pretty isolated. I probably would have liked it, but I have no taste.

You raise a good point. There are many places in the world that have the reputation for being terrible but are actually quite nice. For example, when I was in the FS Basic Officer’s Course, Ouagadougou was often used as the epitome of an unpleasant posting and yet I greatly enjoyed my time there.
