UK-France nuclear declaration tomorrow will state that "any adversary threatening the vital interests of Britain or France could be confronted by the strength of the nuclear forces of both nations." www.gov.uk/government/n...

The Prime Minister and President Emmanuel Macron will also today agree to deepen their nuclear cooperation and work more closely than ever before on nuclear deterrence. In an important step forward for the UK-France nuclear partnership – a newly signed declaration will state for the first time that the respective deterrents of both countries are independent but can be co-ordinated, and that there is no extreme threat to Europe that would not prompt a response by both nations. As such, any adversary threatening the vital interests of Britain or France could be confronted by the strength of the nuclear forces of both nations. Co-operation between both countries on nuclear research will also deepen, while working together to uphold the international non-proliferation architecture. The UK and France are Europe’s only nuclear powers, with deterrents that contribute significantly to the overall security of NATO and the Euro-Atlantic.

I've worked up an assessment of U.S. and Israeli missile defense interceptor expenditures since June 13 Based on video evidence AT LEAST, 39 THAAD, 34 Arrow-3, & ~9 Arrow-2s have been used. For more on the methodology, ABM sites in Israel, and implications, check out the article

With the United Kingdom‘s 🇬🇧 recent announcement to purchase the F-35A and join NATO‘s nuclear mission, I guess it‘s a good time to repost my article “Making Nuclear Sharing Credible Again: What the F-35A means for NATO” that was published 2023 in @warontherocks.bsky.social.

Isn’t it pretty unlikely that the B-2’s radar cross-section has been revealed? Iranian GBAD apparently did not see the strike package, and the SEAD jets apparently fired anti-radiation missiles so that the Iranians keep their radars off.

Interesting point by @coreyah.bsky.social: Not a good precedent to hit operational nuclear facilities. But facilities targeted in Iran were primarily large chemical industrial plants, not nuclear power plants. Hazard is primarily a chemical hazard, not a radiological one.

On point 1) You may not agree with the assessment, but there’s likely stuff we don’t know.

And yet: “If there is a widespread urgency or willingness in Congress to cooperate on bills that create safeguards around nuclear war, it was not apparent.”

Why am I so unimpressed by these strikes? Israel and the US have failed to target significant elements of Iran's nuclear materials and production infrastructure. RISING LION and MIDNIGHT HAMMER are tactically brilliant, but may turn out to be strategic failures. 🧵 1/17
