That’s VAR at its absolute worst. Ruling out a really good goal (the first of a young player’s career) for a decision that was not a clear and obvious error. It was an accidental collision. Ref totally wrong to call it a ‘careless challenge’.

Different players of course but Newcastle paying £69m for Woltemade, a relatively unproven 23yo, makes the £51m we paid for 22yo Xavi look like even better business
And that really matters. We’re in this situation - soaring levels of hate towards asylum seekers - not just because of a section of the media that has deliberately stoked it for decades, but because of a warped perception of what balance and impartiality really mean
The media should listen and to report on the views of these protestors (marginalising/ignoring is not the answer) but they cannot go unchallenged, be unaccompanied by the facts, or represented disproportionately. Major media outlets repeatedly fail on these three points
I despair for the editorial standards of so much of our media, I really do. Far too many decisions taken by editors who have lost sight of how to report on sensitive subjects responsibly and why it’s so damaging when we don’t
This thread by Sky News on the other place is abysmal journalism. There’s a way to report on this topic fairly and responsibly without uncritically amplifying the views of misinformed bigots. It’s not enough to say ‘oh well also speak to the other side next week’

Thing is, he’s not a natural LW. He’s a second striker who we hope can develop in other positions. I don’t know what his strongest role will be but he’s not currently ready to start in any position on a regular basis.
Not if we sign a left-winger before the deadline... (and, if we don't, I expect Frank will continue to set up a little differently from game to game, with Xavi featuring at AM, LW and sometimes on the right)
No question. It's a brilliant response to several high profile setbacks. Not filler or a signing for the sake of it, but a genuine star who immediately makes us a more dangerous team
I'm not mad keen on comparisons (both can be and are exciting signings). If forced, I'd say I'd have loved Eze - he's an establised PL star and would have been a game changer - but Xavi is more of a goal threat, more explosive, has a higher ceiling and is a much better age profile for a big signing
I mean Bale on loan was higher profile than anyone but I wasn't counting him. This is definitely the highest profile deal since VdV. Soldado not in the conversation

As far as I understand, he was our first choice at 10. We'd been in dialogue with his people from early on in the window, but it seemed Chelsea had turned his head. We then pivoted to MGW when that opportunity came up, then to Eze. Xavi may well top both. He's is younger, has a higher ceiling
Xavi Simons is a 'star' player, our highest profile signing since van der Vaart in 2010. He's an elite ball carrying and goal scoring midfielder who can play through the middle and on the wings; a real 'bums off seats' type. Questions over his defensive contributions, but to me that's not an issue
'Xavi 7' is going to look very nice on the new third kit
