I want my club to look at his situation and think: 'we should do whatever it takes to support that young man'.
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
We're constantly told there's no room for sentiment in football. Perhaps not. But if it were up to me, I'd bring Dele back in a heartbeat, even if it's just as a supportive place to keep fit. Get him involved with the young players - they'd get so much out of it.

It's not a straight choice between agreeing with him or not listening at all. There's a middle ground that, for example, doesn't involve the PM agreeing with a line of questioning that implies all asylum seekers are rapists
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
It's utterly soul-destroying to have a PM who panders to right wing fearmongering over asylum seekers. I don't get it morally, and I don't understand what Starmer thinks he can gain politically by agreeing with Farage at every turn

Here's a question for you Jack. Will Kolo Muani contribute more than these famous Tottenham loanees? (A) Werner - 4 goals+assists in 25 games (23/24) (B) Vinicius - 13 g/a in 22 (20/21) (C) Bale - 19 g/a in 33 (20/21)

He's being described as able to play across the front three. Nonsense. He's played 90% of his games at CF. Richy has a lot more experience at LW, and he's not great there. Looks like we'll be making do with one from Johnson, Odobert or Tel on the left, none of whom are ideal.
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
Of the four senior signings - Kudus, Palhinha, Simons and Kolo Muani - the latter is the one I'm most skeptical about, by a distance. Frank said we wouldn't bring in filler. RKM is filler. It feels like a deal that made sense when his stock was high 2/3 years ago, but looks like a panic deal now

FT 0-1. A deserved loss and a deflating reality check. Lucky not to have lost by two or three to a team that were much than us on the day in all aspects of the game. Frank's done a lot right so far but choosing that midfield for this type of game was a misstep. Another defeat going into an int break
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
We’re not losing because of it but the standard of refereeing has been appalling this afternoon
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
Looks like TF is initially opting for the ‘you got us into this, you get us out’ approach. Not a fan, personally, but we’ll see
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
Bergvall the obvious change here. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t come on for Palhinha. I wouldn’t wait too long before getting Odobert on either. Big shame there’s no Solanke as nothing is sticking to Richy at all
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
And another thing Booing the team is pathetic, especially in the current circumstances
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
No need to panic or be weird about it. It’s far from over. But there are some obvious changes that need to be made, preferably at HT. That midfield lineup is too stodgy for a game like this. I’d also like to a more natural LW come in for Johnson. He’s a passenger right now
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
0-1 HT. Easily the worst half of football so far under TF. Nothing working. They’re first to every ball. No one in midfield wants the ball and when they get on it there’s no guile or bravery. The front line are all having stinkers. This is where TF earns his onions. Massive improvement needed

Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
Of course Chelsea score well into the injury time that was only added on because of the delay caused by VAR unjustly ruling out a goal they had conceded
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
That’s VAR at its absolute worst. Ruling out a really good goal (the first of a young player’s career) for a decision that was not a clear and obvious error. It was an accidental collision. Ref totally wrong to call it a ‘careless challenge’.
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
I think Woltemade is an exciting player and will do well, to be clear
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
Different players of course but Newcastle paying £69m for Woltemade, a relatively unproven 23yo, makes the £51m we paid for 22yo Xavi look like even better business
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
And that really matters. We’re in this situation - soaring levels of hate towards asylum seekers - not just because of a section of the media that has deliberately stoked it for decades, but because of a warped perception of what balance and impartiality really mean
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
The media should listen and to report on the views of these protestors (marginalising/ignoring is not the answer) but they cannot go unchallenged, be unaccompanied by the facts, or represented disproportionately. Major media outlets repeatedly fail on these three points
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
I despair for the editorial standards of so much of our media, I really do. Far too many decisions taken by editors who have lost sight of how to report on sensitive subjects responsibly and why it’s so damaging when we don’t
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
This thread by Sky News on the other place is abysmal journalism. There’s a way to report on this topic fairly and responsibly without uncritically amplifying the views of misinformed bigots. It’s not enough to say ‘oh well also speak to the other side next week’
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
I’ve long since given up trying to work out Chelsea’s transfer strategy but signing Buonanotte on loan, with no option, is a new level of baffling
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
I think, if we bring in another forward, he’ll be loaned out. Feels pretty clear he’s below Odobert in the pecking order on the left. Only thing that might change that is he can, theoretically, cover CF
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
Thing is, he’s not a natural LW. He’s a second striker who we hope can develop in other positions. I don’t know what his strongest role will be but he’s not currently ready to start in any position on a regular basis.
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
Not if we sign a left-winger before the deadline... (and, if we don't, I expect Frank will continue to set up a little differently from game to game, with Xavi featuring at AM, LW and sometimes on the right)
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
No question. It's a brilliant response to several high profile setbacks. Not filler or a signing for the sake of it, but a genuine star who immediately makes us a more dangerous team
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not mad keen on comparisons (both can be and are exciting signings). If forced, I'd say I'd have loved Eze - he's an establised PL star and would have been a game changer - but Xavi is more of a goal threat, more explosive, has a higher ceiling and is a much better age profile for a big signing
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean Bale on loan was higher profile than anyone but I wasn't counting him. This is definitely the highest profile deal since VdV. Soldado not in the conversation

Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social) reply parent
As far as I understand, he was our first choice at 10. We'd been in dialogue with his people from early on in the window, but it seemed Chelsea had turned his head. We then pivoted to MGW when that opportunity came up, then to Eze. Xavi may well top both. He's is younger, has a higher ceiling
Gareth Davies (@garethtbij.bsky.social)
Xavi Simons is a 'star' player, our highest profile signing since van der Vaart in 2010. He's an elite ball carrying and goal scoring midfielder who can play through the middle and on the wings; a real 'bums off seats' type. Questions over his defensive contributions, but to me that's not an issue
