Once screwed up in a gust sailing a single hand trapeze, lost hold of the tiller and main sheet, slipped my footing and ended up skimming the waves on my back, still clipped on, as the boat took off on a screaming reach.

It's an absolutely cracking piece and, I feel, gets right to the heart of the topic. Meets it head on and offers a really positive message. Something I'll save and maybe refer back to in future conversations with my young son. Thanks for writing this

Enjoyed this as I always do your writing but am I allowed I minor nitpick? Bill Gates used to make terrible software, oddly MS hardware has a less crappy history but they never made actual computers as far as my memory serves

The Secret Service shot an armed man near the White House today. Reportedly a disturbed, suicidal man who traveled there from the Midwest. I figure this will become a regular pilgrimage, the unhinged and hopeless coming from all over the country to die at the gates of the White House.

British troops have fought and died alongside the Americans in Afghanistan and Iraq, just to be written off as non-existent people from "some random country". We have to maintain tolerable relations with this administration to try and minimise damage, but my god it's not easy.

was in california for customer meetings, abt 3wks before uk lockdown. Remember everyone shaking hands at the start of week to greet each within a day or so that stopped and everyone was pumping hand sanitiser regularly. we were worried abt getting stuck in a local lockdown and not getting back to UK

The average American voter thinks that the government is too big but that it should spend more money on everything it does. This explains a decent share of the political chaos of this country.

"Bloodbath" is an apt description. The number of deaths that will occur as a direct result of U.S. funding being axed is no different from indiscriminate bombing erasing entire populations during a war. It is tantamount to genocide. The U.S. was once the "good" guy. www.science.org/content/arti...

Everyone knows what happened here. Trump can only exist around people he can causally humiliate. Guys lie JD and Rubio. He wanted to do a ritual humiliation of Zelensky and Ukraine but Zelensky wouldn’t accept that and so Trump reacted like a stung bitch.

So much of the US coverage of the German elections is cast in a "sky is falling" AfD rising apocalypse frame. I get it. The AfD is going to 2x its vote and get around 20%. But another way to look at this is that the AfD blew it. The conditions couldn't be better for the AfD to surge and yet. 1/ 🧵

Elon Musk's mother moved to South Africa in the year Apartheid was created, and she and Elon left the year it ended. The last Apartheid Prime Minister, a man who refused to testify at the Truth and Reconciliation Committee, was a family friend who stayed at their home. This is not a crazy theory.

The next election is a whole US presidency away, probably. Far too soon for this kind of claim about what the polls do and do not show, beyond 'the official opposition are not yet convincing people as an alternative to the government, so disgruntled voters are looking elsewhere'.

You think they don't? It seems to me the unfairness of being able to effortlessly monetise others' works thru AI is rightly upsetting a lot of creators. The language around theft etc stems from this and the lack of representation of creators in the drive for wider use of gen AI
Gavin (@gavcwilson.bsky.social) reply parent
Fair point. Maybe the key difference is the industrialisation and automation. Rather than a considered osmosis and distillation into a new work, you press a button and derivative crap comes out in great volume.
Gavin (@gavcwilson.bsky.social) reply parent
True enough but a text like that would be expected to contain references and a bibliography, would it not? Nobody touting the glorious future of gen AI is even pretending to address that bit.

Meta’s big bet is that people would rather live in a world they know is faked but where they hear what they like to hear (or simply *feel* things that trigger dopamine) than live in the non-virtual world, where the truths are.. harder. So far it’s been a winning bet. We need to wake the fuck up.

Thinking about how Michael Mann’s transition from film to digital reflected his evolving thematic interests. Here, two similar types of shot. In “Heat”, on film, the city blurs into a sea of lights in the background. In “Miami Vice”, on digital, objects miles away remain clearly defined.
