3.4% of K-12 students in the US were homeschooled during the 2022-23 academic year (up from the 2.8% in 2018-19). We know that 1 in 5 high school graduates are functionally illiterate and... you are just going to assume this guy is homeschooled? Ok.

I hold teachers in the highest regard. I spent years going to school board meetings and fighting by their side. I strongly support public education but I was grateful that an alternative existed. My homeschooler went away for college and she is thriving. My schooler hated the dorm and commutes.

The boy who was pulled after a classmate held a pair of scissors to his neck. At our nationally ranked magnet school there was no recess after 2nd grade and often no talking during lunch. How is that social? Almost all of the kids were on ADHD meds. Many were on anxiety meds as well.

So no child has ever graduated from high school without being proficient in math? I live in Louisiana. That happens. Kids can develop issues from a school environment too. The shy girl who was bullied so severely that she had anorexia at 10. The special needs kids who never had a single friend.

I have no objection to registering. I do mind insinuating that homeschool = abuse. I know a number of people who pulled their children out of school because of bullying - by students and / or teachers. Isn't that abuse? For me it was the elimination of recess just for the sake of test scores.

The kids in our group had various needs that were not being served in traditional schools. Many of the kids were LGBT, or autistic, or had some type of handicap that kept them from fitting in. They were all welcome and they thrived in a place where peer pressure is almost non existent.

You are painting with a really broad brush here. People homeschool for lots of different reasons. Things have changed with covid but we belonged to a huge inclusive homeschooling group. We had our choice of fieldtrips, dances, classes, and social events to participate in.

I don't know who called for a 40 day boycott but mine began weeks ago and it won't stop until something changes.

Most of my conversations with my Aunt are similar, especially the end. I routinely get screamed at for thinking "I know everything" when I try to explain the basics of things like tariffs and NATO. We used to be very close. She is sick, and will likely die in the near future, and we rarely talk now

My husband leans left and I always leaned right. During Obama and Bush we had some big political fights but they passed. Times have changed. We are on the same page but our family members are maga. I don't think I could manage being in your shoes. That's rough and I am sorry. Good luck.

We get a tiny bit from time to time but the last time New Orleans had an actual inch of snow was 1963. 6-8 inches are possible tomorrow. The last time we had anything like that here was 1895.

My daughter was born 5 days before Katrina. It took 7 months to get her original birth certificate and another 6 to get a copy last year (it normally takes days). Some federal records have her birthday in Sept, instead of Aug, which make things extra fun occasionally. There are lasting effects.

They have been very open about the desire to denaturalize citizens en masse.

You can only see a glimpse of her climbing through the window in this particular clip. She is wearing a backpack and has an American flag tied on like it was a cape.

I don't think they are but that's just my opinion.

I take it back and fully admit that I was wrong.

And you honestly believe that there would be graffiti on the Royal Sonesta hotel?

I am looking at the pavement and structure. The common elements of the French Quarter are very recognizable. The neighborhood is 300 years old so all construction and remodeling projects follow strict guidelines. There indeed was an isis flag on his truck BUT this is not a photo from the area.
gennieraider.bsky.social (@gennieraider.bsky.social) reply parent
I can guarantee that this photo wasn't taken in the French Quarter.

It looks like the bollards wouldn't have stopped him. He drove around the police car and used the sidewalk to get onto Bourbon. He could have done exactly the same thing if the barrier was working and raised. Post style bollards will need to be added to the sidewalks.
gennieraider.bsky.social (@gennieraider.bsky.social) reply parent
In 2017 they installed steel barriers that can be raised and lowered. Beads and trash cause them to malfunction frequently. The city is in the process of replacing them now. A police car was used to block the intersection but the perp jumped the curb and used the sidewalk to get onto Bourbon.

The investigation is ongoing. I prefer to use qualifiers until more facts about things like motive are released.

I don't want anything but facts. He may have been an Islamic terrorist but that doesn't mean that he wasn't "homegrown". He was.

It isn't, but the man who attacked my city was born, raised, and a current resident of TX.

You can identify the location in videos / photos. The truck crashed in the street between the Royal Sonesta hotel and the Prohibition bar / club.
gennieraider.bsky.social (@gennieraider.bsky.social) reply parent
The lift he crashed into was parked just before Conti so... 2.5 blocks?

I am sorry this happened to him. This is a tragic event and my heart goes out to his family. I hope the perpetrator is caught and punished appropriately. Now, that being said, I suspect the story behind this shooting will be even more tragic.

Unfounded accusations? This isn't secret information or anything. He has been pretty open about the desire to do exactly this.

I am still frozen. I know I will work my way out of it but I can only handle a few minutes of info about the new administration at a time right now. My kids are 17-21 years old so the next 4 years will impact on the trajectory of their lives. My concern, and anger, are just overwhelming right now.
