Also, it's terribly awkward that the "very unfriendly foreign invader" has been America's #1 ally in East Asia for the past half century -- on the other hand, maybe he's just imagining something.

Speaking as someone who used to spend time in their chats, SO much of US contemporary fascism is a function of men assuming that the way adulthood worked was, you got a job and in exchange you got a woman to be your mom plus your sex toy. They are ENRAGED that they have a job but no sex mommy.
Jerry (@geraldlombardi.bsky.social) reply parent
Quite true, which demonstrates the power of words to influence our thinking. Someone back in the day could've called it fascist realism instead, but didn't. Gillo Dorfles's book "Kitsch: the World of Bad Taste" has a good chapter about politics and kitsch.
Jerry (@geraldlombardi.bsky.social)
"Socialist" is a misnomer. It's totalitarian realism, rooted in the reality-fearing, complexity-denying kitsch worldview of dictators and their followers, whether of the right or left. Nazis and Francoists hewed to the same awful aesthetic as Stalinists and Maoists.

Nice turnabout there, but "socialist" is a misnomer. It's totalitarian realism, rooted in the reality-fearing, complexity-denying kitsch worldview of dictators and their followers, whether of the right or left. Nazis and Francoists had the same taste as Stalinists and Maoists.
