And why the Annie? Because at the end of the day, they are the throughline to the entire arch of this story. Broken up after Conrail & piecemealed to different operators, their trajectory has led their current operator to control their entire legacy railroad for the first time in nearly 50 years.
Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social)
Really, though, it isnāt truly ending, thanks to a condition of the sale being retention of the name. But this effectively ends the independent legacy of the Ann Arbor Railroad and Macy whatās left of it (Toledo-Ann Arbor/Saline) folded into GLC. My PFP this month then honors the legacy Annie.

The position that I take with, this is the same one. Iāve always taken with photos and to a degree videos: nothing lasts forever, and you should document it, even if it bores the shit out of you or doesnāt really interest you.

Something tells me theyāre going to love you. They really want more historic recordings than new recordings. Thatās something that I am tragically not really able to help them with other than potentially having the old Okemos, MI detector, I mentioned.
Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social) reply parent
Just for kicks, hereās my collection. My numbers got a pretty big boost when I picked up pretty much every CSX detector between Washington, DC and Pittsburgh last November on the final run of the Capitol Limited. Iām trying to fill in gaps back home in Michigan as I can, but itās proven difficult.
Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social) reply parent
@prrsignal.bsky.social hereās one more example that you might appreciate.
Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social) reply parent
Itās very easy. Check these photos. The detector I picked as an example is the one closest to my hometown in MI. Somewhere on one of my old 8 mm tapes, I have some audio of this CMA02-D that I grew up listening to. Just need to go to my dadās and watch the tapes to find it.
Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social) reply parent
I think youād find the culture is fairly similar to at least Western Ontario. I have some extremely personal reasons why I wonāt go back, but I still love it and next to Illinois. Itās probably the best state in the lower midwest. Way way better than both Ohio and Indiana beneath it.
Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social) reply parent
Are you referring to Mexico? Iām sure that they would be open to adding detectors in Mexico if they had people down there to help them. I donāt think either of the owners are on this platform otherwise I might try to tag them, but itās Nick Wilson and Spencer Harman who run it.
Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social) reply parent
This site got a lot of attention in the week of the East Palestine disaster. I found a very quickly that they didnāt have current audio of most of the detectors here in my adopted Northeast Ohio. It has two owners. Amtrak owns the majority of it, and Metro North owns a section in New York and Connecticut. Also freight railroads didnāt just buy up the tracks, theyāve always owned them. Thatās been a fixture of our rail system pretty much since the beginning - 200 years in 2027.
Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social) reply parent
Theyāll keep using air and road convoys to move troops around before they use the trains. The DOD does want Amtrak for true, extreme emergencies but they never really use it. Guy below me talking about homeless encampments might be on to something.
Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social) reply parent
Youāre proving my point actually. No, a truly continental system that tries to touch every single corner of the continent doesnāt work, but you can have a baseline continental system that still serves regional centers and interconnects. thats effectively what Europe has if you take the borders away.
Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social) reply parent
Railroads in the Golden Age provided really great public transportation, even though it wasnāt public in the modern sense that we know it today. The auto manufacturers are largely responsible for the decimation of our passenger rail system. Interestingly, not ford though. He liked trains.
Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social) reply parent
Youāre misread this he is not taking control of Amtrak. Heās just taking management of Washington Union Station away from them. Which is still bad but not as bad as youāre making it out to be. Him actually trying to take over Amtrak would be very very thorny with how itās actually set up.

Gregg (@greaterlaker.bsky.social) reply parent
This is the station not the railroad, which is already nationalized and was from its beginning in 1971. Nationalizing the private freight system that makes up the majority of our rail network would actually be a good thing at this point, believe it or not.
