Alas, manuscript shows rarely travel like that, because the works are light-sensitive and the organizers have usually worked out how many days etc. the various pages will be on view before they have to be put away again. But the Morgan does lots of great manuscript shows too!! Psalms in the Fall!

Will you be visiting the Burrell? Such a lovely museum, if you have time!

The building that is now the Bonnefont restaurant was part of the estate, too -- I think it was the carriage house? Something like that. But yes, the Cloisters is modeled after fortified monasteries in the Pyrenees, so it does have a bit of a castle look to it ๐ฐ

Fun fact (that you may already know): the Billings Arcade was there before it was a park! I find it so haunting to think about how there was a whole mansion up there that disappeared -- makes you wonder what else might be gone in another century or so... www.forttryonparktrust.org/sites/billin...
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed. I find it sad and scary that we can't formulate some sort of message like "everyone should have freedom in their personal life" and "everyone should live with dignity" that creates space and protection, but also doesn't create talking points around new acronyms

It's satire.
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
I think some of the legal strategies he plays around with go back 40+ years to when he was relatively sharp, but yeah, nowadays it's got to be people like Todd Blanche or whatever other lackeys he has handling this stuff.
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
No, that's the thing, Trump files frivolous lawsuits related to things that are happening in plain sight and are not actually illegal, like CBS editing an interview or something. These receipts are different and the last thing Trump would want is to initiate discovery on these sources.
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
THIS! I do think there's value in showing up to an actual public square and protesting in person. I don't think there's much value in shitposting about virtue. A lot of Trump supporters are older folks who are not online much, and you're better off talking to them than arguing with a 4chan incel

Right?! And they don't see any meaningful distinction between "research done in labs and hospitals by highly trained professionals" and "research done by googling until you find a website that you like" ๐ซฃ

Yeah, and when half of the Nazis are just Nazi bots, or paid trolls, it's even worse. They exist simply to tire us out. Go stand on a corner with a big sign and talk to your neighbors; that's got a far better chance of accomplishing something

Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
The first one is a Green Man -- you find them fairly regularly in sculptures and manuscripts from ca. 1200-1600; one of the earliest is under the feet of the horse of the Bamberg Rider, on the console: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamberg...

Robert Bork was 1987. Is the argument really that if we deny one person a SCOTUS seat, then 38 years later we won't be able to deny an even worse guy? Really? Can't we just set certain standards and stick to it, instead of grading the right wing on a curve??
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
"perverse act of revenge" is a really really helpful way of thinking about all the people who bought the "genocide Joe" narrative
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
Me? No, I'm not confused, I know Jeffries was attacking Mamdani. I was acknowledging Gavin's point that NY Post headline is dumb/misleading and that the 421A abatement is not specific to Jeffries, and agreeing with SCTF that Jeffries is being an awful hypocrite and a poor leader here.
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes, this. The headline uses the misleading word "sweetheart" to make people think Jeffries is personally getting special treatment when he's not, BUT both ZM and HK benefit from good policies that should be supported and expanded, not attacked and dismantled.
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
LOL "out Reek" is the perfect way to describe this, thank you ๐

Or here -- it's that balance of white silver-stain glass pieces in some areas (now grayed with time), and then those deep blues, reds, etc.: www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
oh and the juxtaposition of strong colors plus grisaille/silver-stain is closed linked to 15th-16th century glass, especially Cologne and surrounding regions, so that's another place to look for sources. Compare the colors in this late medieval panel, for example: www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
You might try looking through work by artists linked to William Morris and the Kelmscott Press. Ultimately that derives from medieval manuscripts too, of course, but through a Pre-Raphaelite filter, and because they emulate woodcuts, it all has strong linear contours that translate easily to glass

I think a lot about how closely this parallels immigration BS. You cannot tell someone's gender OR nationality by looking at them or hearing their voice. If one person out there is forced to show their papers/tits, we are all forced to show our papers/tits

I have heard it said that Hitler sounded laughably coarse and dumb to his critics, and the world found it hard to believe that Germany, of all places - famous for universities, the land of poets and thinkers - would follow him. (WWII comparisons are exhausting, I know, and yet so many are so apt)
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
I am also inclined to think they were bots, but literally only two other people responded to my comment, and one of the two is here to argue with me b/c they think Harris deserved to lose since she didn't oppose genocide hard enough. I don't think that person will ever admit to letting Trump win ๐

Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
Would I have preferred for Kamala Harris to be a stronger speaker in general, and to have an eloquent and compelling message on this issue specifically? Yes. Could I tell a year ago that she would do her best to stop the war, and that Trump would make no effort whatsoever to oppose Bibi? Also yes
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
Yes. It was always a choice between "the US government as we know it, in which there's bad things happening but you can protest legally and vote for better people" and "actual fascism" -- but they couldn't see it, not least because they believed that the US was already "fascist" somehow
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm haunted by this thought. There were a lot of people shouting online that they could never vote for Kamala because "Genocide Joe" was 100% to blame for Gaza. There was a lot of magical thinking about how that would work out. I still can't quite believe they were real people, but here we are

For manuscripts specifically, check the websites of the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Walters Art Museum. Those are arguably the best medieval manuscript collections in North America -- also the Morgan Library, which has an extraordinary collection but sadly a somewhat dated website.

The facts that North and South Dakota are not just Dakota, and Puerto Rico and DC are not states, means that the Senate is already gerrymandered AF. So yes, time to fight fire with fire, at least until we have a new Voting Rights Act, which won't be for a while

Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
This is a haunting thought, and all the more so coming from you, given that your own work is such a model for seeing the powerful resonance between medieval and modern histories. I have been trying to keep calm and carry on, but it's not easy.
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
*sorry, has, not had. I mean, on some level, I also find it hard to think his cult won't remain loyal. But MAGA has been so invested in this particular conspiracy, and it's hard to think of another example where their own narrative has been so blatantly reversed. Consistency is key to his lies.
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
I think because it's a flip-flop. Like, everything else he labels as a hoax, has always been branded as a hoax by him. For Epstein, these exact people -- Trump plus the five or so toadies in the headlines -- they campaigned on wild promises about Epstein. It's the reversal that had MAGA in revolt
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
You know what's cruel? Campaigning as a progressive for years and then suddenly taking a hard right turn as soon as you're elected. I was a fan for years and no longer recognize you
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
Agreed, that seems to be the most plausible line of thinking. It's still so bizarre and lacking in logic. 25th amendment is a nice thought but these toadies fled at the mere idea of taking a vote he might not like, so...

Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
This is my question too! Does he mean McCain '08 or Romney '12 should have won? He doesn't especially love those guys. Does he mean Obama cheated but he won anyway? Obama cheated to make Biden win while Trump was president? Why isn't anyone asking this?
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean, back in my day they were too busy chasing the ladies, but I admit I haven't actually been to Paradise lately
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
That's basically the way medieval people saw it -- here's God creating Adam & Eve, but the three red prongs in the halo are meant to evoke the Cross and remind you that God really is Jesus. (Of course these are also people who imagined centaurs hunting camels in Paradise, so really anything goes)
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent

Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
10 times smaller, not 100x, right? I'm also mildly surprised that the pre-1900 numbers aren't higher, but I suspect it's also because it's high enough that everyone knew someone who died, and it was a constant fear, to the point where it's more like 1 out of every 10 women in premodern literature

Also, the Cloisters is part of the Met, so the same ticket will get you into both, but it's hard to fit both into the same day -- unless you plan to visit on a Friday, go to the Cloisters first in the morning, and then go to the Met and stay for their Friday evening late hours.
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
Randomly saw this while searching for other stuff: for the Cloisters, easiest way is to get off the A train at 190th, take the elevator up to Ft Washington Ave, and transfer to the M4 bus. Hardest way is to take the A to Dyckman and hike up the hill, but sadly that's what Google Maps tells people

Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
Can't believe I know this, but oh well -- Julian is the son of his second marriage, and that age gap isn't so bad, but it's the third marriage from around this time that's borderline illegal.

Here's another example from the late Middle Ages: the pelican often appears with three chicks at their feet, curling their necks forward to reach their breast; I can imagine the missing part of the Canterbury roof boss might have also included a long, thin neck like this, which would break easily.
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
It's most likely a pelican; they often look a bit like falcons in medieval art. The lore was that they would pierce their own breast to feed the chicks with their blood, which was understood as analogy for Christ's self-sacrifice and the blood of the Eucharist. (Architectural term is a roof boss.)

Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
No, just social media users reading and commenting quickly, I think. Hopefully we are all on the same side; politicians can be both 1) great for moving a conversation forward, and 2) better suited for their local city/district/state than for a national election. Indeed that's even healthy, imho!
Penthesilea (@hansklocker.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the emphasis marks and the "sigh" at the end of the comment means that Mr. Burbach does *not* actually think that, but ymmv.
