Aka trampagne! Killed a lot of street drinkers and the ban on white cider was introduced after it overtook heroin in total deaths. Nasty stuff and by far the cheapest alcohol in the UK at the time.
Most places declined to serve snakebite as anyone with the slightest inclination to violence in drink became incredibly violent after snakebite. I had one usually placid mate who got very fighty very quickly.
There's a distinction here between white cider which is brewed from apples that have already been juiced with corn syrup added to boost alcohol to over 8%. White Lightning and other white ciders were made so and now discontinued. Scrumpy is typically around 9% anyway.
