In WW 1, they had specific machine gun regiments separate from the rest of the infantry, they remedied that in WW2 but integrated divisions to form multiple dedicated battle groups of infantry, armour, artillery & engineers were not a fixture for decades. It would have helped if it were otherwise.
4th and 5th were our Amoured Divisions but they did not fight in Italy, the 1st Infantry Division fought up the east coast of Italy, they had about 200 Shermans, no Churchills that I'm aware of-but maybe they borrowed some from the UK...
