I assume it’s that the platform’s auto detect failed. That happens to me in slack reasonably often

Where would the WH get the money for such a bailout?
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
You don’t look as old as him
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Some parents feed their newborns stuff called colostrum. Can you even imagine?!
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Isn't a folate supplement already suggested to reduce the risk of spina bifida?
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Thought about the amount of paperwork involved and just couldn’t see that being a good use of time. My wife was already inclined to keep her name anyway and I actively supported her.

Sigh. Gonna have to swap out the Chromecast, aren’t I? (I do have more confidence in Google to respect my consent choices than the TV manufacturers, plus I can play desktop games on the tv through it)

I see little kids running around all afternoon, but soon after they just collapse and don’t get up from the bed for 10+ hours

We apparently replicate the Poly(A) tail that exists on naturally produced mRNAs. There's even a wikipedia entry describing cells adding it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyade...
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
IIRC, one of the key initial challenges was getting the mRNA to last long enough to be effective
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe it’s a reference to analog cockpit dials, not rotary phones
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Like that part of the argument is reasonable, imho, although for manufacturing I imagine it’d be more flexible non-humanoid robots
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the idea is that we’re versatile even if not optimal for everything so a humanoid robot would be similar. Needing a different robot for every task wouldn’t be efficient in a house, and it can make some assembly lines less versatile.

*of a season, obviously
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
For me, some of that is the unpredictability. You know the doctor won’t die, at most regenerate and even then only at the end if a season. But will Sally Sparrow survive? Unclear!
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Hadn't thought of the artificial reef angle. I wonder if they can be dense enough to limit beach erosion, storm surges, etc?
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
What is the video link? Although I'd be hesitant to actually tap on it
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
I needed this clarification!

Can the chief justice be made a non-voting administrative position?
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Growing up in the area, it hadn't actually occurred to me that most of the country wasn't like that until I went out of state for college 🤯
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Was gonna guess a bot, but maybe not across so many subreddits
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
It isn't linear. And getting excited and overdoing things is a pretty normal reaction, imho, even when we know we shouldn't
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the latter is the only plausible explanation. I wish you luck
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
For wildfire smoke, if you have central heat putting a smoke-quality filter on the furnace and just running the blower (no heat) does a lot. Probably useful for covid with the right filter, too, but that's harder to test

Didn't he stop doing all caps in response to Newsom?
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
I thought the all caps thing went away after Newsom started doing it
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Kind of a shame you feel it's better to avoid being creative with language at this point but I can understand why
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
We also demand receipts from those experts in the form of peer reviewed research. Even if they don't do the research themselves, their judgement is expected to be based on such work.

But also, the screens rotate content while prioritizing station info. I was looking for which social media channels they showed a few days ago and ran out of time on one leg since I thought of it with only a couple mins left. A wait like that isn't ideal for restroom info, imho.
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
The error screens are ultimately "webpage unavailable" so it certainly may be possible but the sticker is easier to get working consistently.
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
There's "corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive medications" listed, which might count?
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the screens are all synchronized so trying to have an arrow would break that. They'd not all point in the same direction
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Primary immunodeficiency?
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Hydrocortisone cream is a corticosteroid

I’ve been wondering if coastal areas will see ships in international waters to provide them
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
And location detection is not an entirely solved problem. It’s often pretty good but definitely makes mistakes as you get more granular. Country is usually very good, state/province is often correct but not always, and as you get to city it’s a lot more variable.

Hey, I recognize your account! Welcome back, however long it lasts this time

The fear is that the system is smart enough to create and deploy an advanced biological weapon, but that same system is going to help you design a way to protect yourself from the weapon it developed for use against humans?

Bay Area here, but I like taking the train for the same reason. We dropped to one car when we moved to within walking distance of a station.
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d noticed this locally a long time ago but wasn’t sure if it was, say, microclimates in my area making prediction harder. I guess not!
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
This was my thought, although there were no campaigns around that ballot measure
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Is it different from the long-standing take that if things get bad enough people will finally realize the problem and spontaneously decide to build my version of utopia? It seems similar, although perhaps not identical

An observation I had was that the people who were heads down on engineering classes usually weren’t the best engineering students. My assumption was that being too far into it meant a lack of perspective of why.
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent

Yes, can you not pass an amendment to remove that clause?
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Why can you not pass an amendment to remove the clause preventing that? (Technically, not politically)

I try to do it for other people regardless of age

I’ve gone into that aisle to purchase menstrual products for my wife when she’s asked me to help her restock. Just a package of stuff (with an important use, but still)

Nah, the mint was just incompetence. But it's not that I kill allllll my plants. And I certainly try not to do so
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Stuff in the yard was actually doing ok when I was watering by hand. I have had much worse luck with the irrigation system. But the street trees that we can't do much to are a plausible source of a fungus killing other plants 😭 I don't like my plants dying!
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Potted, not in the ground. But even so everyone said you can't fail with mint!
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
I have unintentionally managed to kill mint. Multiple times!

I'm sure the consultants are furiously telling them to ramp up talk of egg prices

We need to move forward, not look back. Who has ever learned anything from studying the past?
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
We've seen grok do exactly that steering
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm sure there are other tax breaks in there but for higher income people it preserves the otherwise-expiring marginal income tax rates. So things will mostly just seem to stay the same, while prices rise. It's lower vs previous law, but in a way that provides no stimulus.
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent

It's not pedantry. They can't stop states from holding elections. There will be a lot of non-federal offices on the ballot, too.
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
There isn't a federal election. There are lots of state elections for federal offices

Wasn’t being too hands-on a key problem with Cuomo before (even ignoring policy)?
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Not in the NYC area so I didn’t see campaigns up close. But mayor is not a foreign policy position and it seemed like Mamdani was focusing his campaign on city issues?

We saw the Midway in San Diego a few years ago. Definitely worth it. We haven’t yet made it to the Hornet despite there being closer to home but with luck we’ll get there soon!
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah, the second point is pretty huge for all uses, even those that seem apolitical like writing code. There has already been malware trying to exploit hallucinated names of dependent projects. That’s just using passive patterns, not trying to manipulate results. And also, yikes!
Jon (@jmalkin.bsky.social) reply parent
I usually just attempt to identify the language. Not great at it, but it's often possible to narrow it down a fair amount even without knowing many languages yourself

“We worked hard and deserve to live here” — it was several years ago but my wife saw pretty much that exact comment by someone in our (non-Marin County) city on some social media site
